It's clear, the AL has an advantage, but how is that not a given? They have an extra hitter who doesn't have to play any position and a pitcher doesn't hvae to hit. It's comletely different. Regardless of the league, a Carpenter/Wainwright or Lee/Hamels duo is better than a Sabathia/Burnett. |

Welcome back to Toronto Josh Tee-Ball Towers... the same guy who beaned A-Rod a couple years back and got in a fight with Tony Pena(Yanks Bench Coach), called him a quitter for leaving the Royals... funny how things work out in life hehe.

The last week has pretty much finished my Braves from contention for the wild card. The offense has gone stone cold, with Chipper looking like a shell of his former self. His batspeed from the left side is non-existent. If he is not injured, this is the beginning of the end for his career.

Funny that Rios is batting .170ish with the White Sox with 1 HR while his replacement Mr Ruiz is batting .300 with 6 monster HR in only a hand full of games. I hope we have found our scary DH for next season! It's been awhile since we had a monster like him who could actually hit. |

I mostly like Swisher.... probably like 95% of the time or something. But I buy into all the Yankee-tradition stuff, and once in a while he does something that seems more like he's still on a college team, or playing in Oakland. For the most part though, he seems like a great addition to the team, and the clubhouse.
That being said, his walk-off HR last night had to be one of the weakest/cheapest home runs I've ever seen. Edit: Remember this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzxLArgdZSU Last edited by toef; 09-09-2009 at 06:51 PM. |

How 'bout Jeter tying the Iron Horse? ![]() |

It's certainly a big achievement, but in no way does it mean he's better than ol' Lou. Jeter tied Lou for hits, despite playing in 50 fewer games, but that sort of masks the real truth. Jeter has been a leadoff hitter for most of his career, and has averaged about 0.5 more at-bats per game than Gehrig. That might not seem like much, but that's 80 extra at-bats per year, multiplied by 15 years or so, and suddenly it seems huge. So anyway, I don't mean to attack Jeter, because he's certainly a lock for the HoF, but I wonder if even he would think of himself as being in the same league as Gehrig (and based on how humble he's seemed in the past, I doubt he does). |

That's a stretch -- not impossible, but not very likely either.
Derek has been pretty healthy throughout his career. I think him and Ichiro have a legitimate chance to reach Pete Rose's 4,256 all-time career hits record. Right now Jeter has 2,721 career hits throughout 2,119 games. Therefore he needs 1,535 more hits to tie Pete Rose’s record. Jeter has averaged about 142 games throughout 14 seasons. (4,256 hits – 2,721 hits) / (2,721 hits / 2,119 games) / (1,985 games / 14 seasons) equals about 8.43 seasons or about 8 seasons and 70 games to reach 4,256 hits. A big IF, but if Jeter puts up career type numbers for the next 8 plus seasons and stays healthy he has a legitimate chance at Pete Rose's record. Ichiro on the other hand: (4,256 hits – 2,000 hits) / (2,000 hits / 1,403 games) / (1,280 games / 8 seasons) equals about 9.89 seasons or 9 seasons and 144 games. Ichiro is also 35 and would basically have to stay healthy and continue to put up career numbers for about another 10 years until he reaches 45. Thing about Ichiro is he has 1,278 hits when he played in Japan. If only he came to the US in 1993 instead of 2001. If he played his career in the US he would easily have over 3,000 hits by now. Only time will tell, and I do think 3,000 plus hits for both players is more likely than 4,000, but who knows. I definitely think they’re both Hall of Fame material. |

Jeter needs about 1.53 seasons to reach 3,000 hits. (Age: 36) Jeter needs about 4.28 seasons to reach 3,500 hits. (Age: 39) Jeter needs about 7.02 seasons to reach 4,000 hits. (Age: 42) Again ASSUMING he stays healthy and puts up career numbers. Ichiro needs about 4.38 seasons to reach 3,000 hits. (Age: 39) Ichiro needs about 6.57 seasons to reach 3,500 hits. (Age: 41) Ichiro needs about 8.77 seasons to reach 4,000 hits. (Age: 43) Again ASSUMING he stays healthy and puts up career numbers. Oh, and I think after today his autograph definitely went up in value, ![]() |

![]() I agree though. 4,000 is a long shot for Jeter, but it certainly can't be ruled out yet. I agree about Ichiro too. Kind of a shame he didn't get here sooner. But I'm not sure Jeter's autograph would suddenly be going up, because people saw this coming a long time ago. The one weird thing about Jeter is that people, for some reason, don't think he can play much longer. Maybe 3-4 more seasons, if he's lucky, and 5-6 if he's really lucky. Yet A-Rod is under contract with the Yankees through the 2017 season (that's 8 more season after this year, for those counting at home... though to be fair, he is a whopping 1 year younger than Jeter). I guess the argument might be that Jeter and A-Rod will both have to DH at the end of their careers, and if the Yankees can only pick one, it seems like they'd take the prideful-power-production glamour man over the humbled hit-for-average captain. Whatever. I hope one day Posada becomes the Yankee skipper. |
