Revere's been a hitting surprise for us, nice RBI single in the top of the 10th, hopefully Capps can do his job this time and give us a 3-2 win. Guess they already pulled Capps for Dumatrait, can't say I blame them.

I was reading a thread on NYYFans.com about how Mussina was in a game similar to last night’s in 1993 and ended up retaliating against the other team only to have the batter charge the mound. I think Mussina ended up getting hurt costing him six weeks.

You never really know what could happen. In other news Mitchell and Ness is having a sale on jerseys so I picked up a 1951 Mickey Mantle Road jersey,

Hopefully it doesn't rain on Saturday because I am going to the game.
The Yankees are normally not a team that normally retaliates but if you checked the yankees.com message boards, many people on there were blindly wanting blood. BTW, that's not a bad price for that Mickey Mantle jersey. If I had the funds, I would have jumped on and bought all the Yankee jerseys they have (since they are all on sale).

Yeah, I had originally purchased a 1961 Mickey Mantle home jersey a few weeks before the sale, lol. That always happens to me. Oh well.

Whew, we hung on to win in 10. I don't have a lot of faith in Capps, well our bullpen in general, but we've gone 6-1 in our last 7 games. Not too shabby.

If they can win the series against the Rangers, they will be 8-2 or 9-1 in their last 10 games, an insane turn-around for a team that has suffered so many injuries and gotten very inconsistent outings from all of its pitchers.

Rangers select paralyzed Johnathan Taylor

Quote:
Georgia baseball player Johnathan Taylor, who was partially paralyzed after breaking his neck during a collision in a game against Florida State on March 6, was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 33rd round of the amateur baseball draft on Wednesday.

"He's a great kid and he's going through a terrible time in his life and we thought this would be something to uplift him," Kip Fagg, the Rangers' director of amateur scouting, told ESPNDallas.com's Richard Durrett. "I've seen the kid play since high school, he was a great player at Georgia."
What a great story, hats off to the Texas Rangers !!

That was a nice gesture. If most people don't know, many of the later picks in the draft are basically favors to people. Teams will draft children of people working in the organization, or people that have no intention of playing baseball. One team once drafted Michael Vick, after he had finished third in the Heisman voting. He had never played baseball above kiddie ball.

Actually i didnt know that, its pretty cool though

In other news.... Oakland Athletics fire manager Bob Geren

Quote:
The Oakland Athletics fired manager Bob Geren on Thursday in the midst of a nine-game losing streak that has sent them tumbling to the bottom of the AL West standings.

Former Arizona manager Bob Melvin will take over for the rest of the season as interim manager in the first midseason managerial change for the organization in a quarter century.

Yankees relieve Joba Chamberlain has a tear in his ligament in his right elbow and will likely need Tommy John surgery. He will seek a second opinion because he passed all strength tests so they could try to just rest his arm. If he has Tommy John surgery he'll likely be out for 12-18 months. The Yankees bullpen has been decimated with injuries as Rafael Soriano is on the DL and Pedro Feliciano and Damaso Marte could both be out for the year.

It is going to be a struggle this year for the Yankees to make the playoffs. The Red Sox are turning out to be the powerhouse everyone projected them to be, while there are several other teams in the AL that will fight for the Wild Card spot.

You mean like the Dodgers taking Tommy Lasorda's god-son in the 62nd round of the 1988 draft? Whatever happened to that guy, I think his name was Mike Piazza?

Yep... Piazza was a 62nd round, 1,390th player taken in 1988. He was just an unimpressive Community College ballplayer who wouldn't have been drafted had Lasorda not been hig godfather. Hard to believe really. Then again baseball is by far the hardest sport to judge young talent.

It should also be noted that Piazza had a very priviliged childhood. His dad was worth over $100 mill and Piazza received batting instruction in his backyard from Ted Williams. Probably helps having one of the greatest hitters of all-time as a batting instructor and a legendary coach as your mentor/godfather.

Piazza was drafted only as a personal favor by Tommy Lasorda to Mike's Dad. MLB drafts do not even have 62 rounds anymore, they eliminated some of the later rounds. As Chad noted, Piazza was a very rich kid growing up who had a professional hitting cage installed in his home at a young age. That is how he developed the incredible opposite field power to become the greatest hitting catcher of all time.
