I can break it down for you:

(4,256 hits – 2,721 hits) / (2,721 hits / 2,119 games) / (1,970 games / 13 seasons)

• (4,256 hits – 2,721 hits) equals the amount of hits Jeter needs to tie Rose.
• (2,721 hits / 2,119 games) equals Jeter's average hits per game throughout his career.
• (1,970 games / 13 seasons) equals how many games per complete season Jeter plays on average.

• (4,256 hits – 2,721 hits) equals 1,535 hits.
• (2,721 hits / 2,119 games) equals about 1.28 hits per game.
• (1,970 games / 13 seasons) equals about 152 games per season.

Now for the division:

• 1,535 hits divided by 1.28 hits per game equals about 1,199 games.
• 1,199 games divided by 152 games per season equals about 7.89 seasons.
• 0.89 of a season is about 144 games (0.89 * 162 games per season).

So there we arrive at 7.89 seasons or 7 seasons and 144 games.

Or you can just plug this into Google:

(4256 -2721) / (2721/ 2119) / (1970/13)

More interesting statistics:

1913 - 2008 Yankees are 8,620 - 6,323 (.577).

They're playing .068 points better when compared to the average of 95 other Yankee seasons. Not really useful, but whatever.

The 1923, 1927, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1942, 1953, 1954, 1961, 1963, and 1998 Yankees all finished the season with a winning percentage of .645 or better. Of those 15 Yankee teams 12 have won the World Series (80%).

Whether this means something or not you decide.

Jays drew 11,000 fans the past 2 games, the two lowest attendances since the Skydome/Rogers Centre opened... a far cry from the numbers that first broke MLB attendance records in the early 90s with well over 4million fans per season.

It appears baseball is no longer relevant in Toronto. Can't wait until we get moved to Vegas. Thanks to MLB, the Strike of 1994 and Gord Ash's reign of terror(he signed Jose Caneso enough said) for screwing a once proud franchise up!

hateorade... They just have to rebuild, both teams have made crap deals/ had management issues since the 90's. I think even a yankees fan should understand that(as they know alot about bad long term deals ), that can happen.

A decent method of estimating career projections and their chances in baseball is Bill James' Favorite Toy, a statistical model. It can be found here:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/billjames

Even giving Jeter 29 more hits this season (the projected season total), the Toy estimates he will have 3444 career hits. I do not think he has any chance at Rose personally.

The Toy says Ichiro has a 32% chance at 3000 hits.

Yeah, like I stated before, I'd be shocked if he kept his current pace up for 4-5 years, as that would be amazing, but 8+ years I don't think anyone could keep that up.

I have balls signed by Girardi, Leyritz (remember him?) Jeter and Mattingly.

The Girardi and Leyritz ones were from my aunt, when they stopped by her bank one day, right after the 96 WS. They were signed on non-MLB baseballs, with a Sharpie, so the Leyritz signature has pretty much completely faded away (you can still see it if you look closely, but it's basically yellow now).

The Mattingly and Jeter balls are authenticated, and signed in pen on regulation balls. I don't really care what they're worth, because I don't plan on selling them.

At some point I want to get a ball signed by Posada.

I don't put any faith in those numbers, and here's why:

The numbers in RED represent years when there were no playoffs. The top AL and NL teams would meet at the end of the season for the World Series.

Nowadays with 3 divisions and a wild card, you have to make it through two rounds of playoffs before you even have a shot at winning the World Series. It's A LOT easier now for the best team to not win the World Series (and by best team, I mean team with the highest winning %).

For what it's worth, the year noted in BLUE was a time when there was actually a league championship series, so there was one series before the World Series. Kind of in the middle of the red years, and what we currently have today.

By the way, I hate the idea of a best-of-5, because of all the problems its seemed to cause, with "better" teams often losing out to a team that has 1 good pitcher on a hot streak.

Ha! No way, AL East 4Life! Always been there, always will be.

The Jays and O's need to get their stuff straightened out though as mentioned by myself and supersix.

The Jays have been very good between 2006-2008. This year has been a disaster. Fans are tired of it. The winning has skipped almost 2 generations now, hence the 11,000 all of a sudden. That is not good for the Jays or MLB.

Last few seasons we avergaed 30,000 and many AL East games 40K+... so you win, you draw. It's simple. This year look like 22K a game or something I am hearing.

Yikes, the last two weeks I've been out of the sports loop but turned on Sportscentre this morning and Dan O'Toole mentioned that, disappointing to hear... REALLY disappointing considering I was 7 and 8 in 1992/1993.

Yeah, I laughed when I saw the Tigers were leading the AL Central, but if they were in the AL East they'd be 16 games back.

Seems every year that there's one division like that with an "undeserving" winner, where the second place team has absolutely no shot at the wild card.

Boston is six games up on Detroit, and 9.5 on Tampa for the Wild Card.

AL East: NY Yankees
AL Central: Detroit Tigers/Minnesota Twins/Chicago White Sox
AL West: LA Angels
AL Wildcard: Boston Red Sox/Texas Rangers

NL East:
NL Central: St. Louis Cardinals
NL West:
NL Wildcard:

As if the Yankees are the clear winner of the best team in the league now, remember that slide at the start of the season? Yikes.

Yeah easy to tell how the Jays were the best team in baseball in May... they played every team in the Central and some West and no one from the East by that point.

All makes sense now lol

And yeah I am saying the Jays would run away if they were in the Central!

I agree....it's a very hard venture. The Yanks better get past the first half this time.

Rain Delay tonight...hopefully they get to play. I'm waiting for Jeter to get his hit!
