Congrats Jeter! Hitting number 3,000 with a home run to tie the game 1-1, at 2:00 PM for # 2, and now he is a triple away from the cycle.

Mind = blown.

I jumped from my seat when he hit #3,000!

With only 1HR on the year, the fact that he hit #3000 with a HR is pretty incredible. Congrats Jeter. Must have been a mad house at that stadium.

Just when everyone's talking about the decline of Jeter this year, he puts together a game like this and goes 5-5 with a Hr, 2B, and a SB. Congrats on your 3000 hit Jeter.

Well...you know this will be on Yankees classics...went 5/5 (3rd time in his career)....got his 3000th hit with a home run and Jeter is not even a home run hitter. Hit last hr @ home was last year. I think it is safe to say that the baseball gods were looking down on Derek. I've always admired him and grew up watching how he presented himself both on and off the field. What a day and I don't think you could have predicted a game like this at all.

Only Wade Boggs and Jeter now have recorded a homerun as their 3000 hit. Too bad i missed the game.

That was his 3rd homer of the year but yes still unlikely.

Jeter could have retired 3 or 4 years ago and probably still been a 1st ballot HOF'er. That was never in doubt. The fact that there's never been even a hint of roids only makes his case stronger. Hell, can you imagine Jeter's numbers if he actually did roid up?

He can barely move in the field as is. He'd be a totem pole out there at short if he roided up.

Ya, Jeter's game has declined but he's still a very good player. He can still move well for his age.

You can still swipe bags and run the bases efficiently but be a terrible fielder with limited range at the same time. I did say in the field.

Fan returns 3,000th hit to Jeter, team rewards his generosity

As a 23-year-old cell phone salesman, Christian Lopez had thousands of reasons to hold out for the highest bidder on the baseball from Derek Jeter's(notes) 3,000th hit. In fact, some estimates put the ball's worth at $250,000, money that the recent graduate from St. Lawrence University could have certainly used.
And yet when New York Yankees officials found Lopez after he corralled Jeter's historic home run, the only thing that the big Yankees fan wanted was to return the ball to the man who had hit it.

That's a pretty nice gesture, no doubt. But lest you think the Yankees were just going to take the ball away without any compensation, they rewarded Lopez's generosity with a pretty nice package. According to Kay, Lopez will receive four tickets to a suite for every remaining game at Yankee Stadium this season (including any possible playoff games) plus first row Legends Suite tickets to Sunday's game. He will also receive an assortment of bats and jerseys, plus the opportunity to meet Jeter.

haha He's from Middletown which is pretty close to me. He didn't show that much enthusiasm when they were interviewing him in the booth but I give him credit for returning the ball. I would have handed it over as well but I would have asked for a lot more merchandise and memorabilia. :

You're a perfect example of what's wrong with the world today. The kid did the right thing and never asked for anything. and he got a bunch of stuff in return.
