A perfect example of what's wrong with the world is those idiots who fought over the Barry Bonds record breaking HR ball and sued each other till they gained nothing from it. That's just stupid. But catching a record baseball and selling it I see nothing wrong with. If a ball is hit into the stands it belongs to the fan to do as they please.

It's not about greed, it's survival. If I catch a ball that's worth a lot of money I'm selling it for as much as I can get. My mom is disabled has gone without health insurance for 5 years plus and I have other family members who could use that money. It's just a baseball. If I can help my family by making big money off of it I'm taking that option in a heartbeat. I'm sure most folks would do the exact same thing with the economy the way it is and many getting by week to week. I feel no obligation to return the ball for free to a millionaire out of some misguided principle.

I put the value of this ball at about $1 million easily if it went to auction... Only the 24th player ever to achieve his 3000th career hit, a HR , by a Yankee on top of that, BIG BUCKS!!!... With all due respect to the guy who caught the ball, I think he should of at least explored his options out there ... Yankees being the classy organization they are did compensate him, but he could of got tons more by selling it, something I , along with about 95% of the world would of done

Ok, depends on circumstance. If the guy is well off it's not misguided. But I disagree that returning the ball is "the right thing." In baseball a ball hit into the stands has always belonged to the fan who catches it to do what they please. With the "American dream" essentially dead for decades now and most people struggling to survive by working week to week I'd say "the right thing" IS selling the ball and taking care of your family and self rather than returning it to some millionaire for free. I'd feel dirty doing what this fan did. It would be hard for me to justify doing that rather than looking out for my family's financial security.

For free? He got a ton of stuff. Which is proof of the golden rule. Do right by others and you want right done by you. Also, who knows what else might come out of it for the guy.

Well he didn't know what he'd get. He could have gotten nothing in return. But hey, if giving away the ball was what he felt was the right thing to do more power to him. I just don't see it as the "right thing" to do for many reasons. As far as I'm concerned one of the golden rules of baseball is that a ball hit into the stands belongs to the person who catches it. I'm sure most would agree. And even those who don't agree would probably change their mind if they actually caught a ball like this one.

That's the point. He wasn't expecting anything. You know what, forget it. You're just like the rest. It's just me, me, me. Next you'll be saying that robbing a bank for one to get money to eat is the right thing to do.

Please tell me you're joking with that statement. That statement isn't just ignorant of the plight of most Americans, it's insensitive. Robbing a bank is against the law, well... anywhere in the world. Paying (a lot of money) to go to a MLB game and catching a baseball is something fans do a million times each season. Not only is it legal, but it's the rules in pretty much any ballpark at any level of baseball. A ball hit in the stands is your personal property.

This is a country where poor people literally ARE robbing banks to get life-saving procedures done in prison for lack of access to healthcare. Saying someone who sells a baseball that is their personal property isn't just legal and morally acceptable, it's necessary for millions of people. Derek Jeter and the Yankees are worth more money than 99.9%+ of the general public. If they want the ball back they can pay market value for it as far as I'm concerned. They can afford it, unlike most fans who catch a HR ball.

I hope you were at least drunk when you posted that. No way a sober person would post something that dumb.

I'm sure Frank McCourt will publicly declare this happened because of his brilliant ownership.

That's Rickey Henderson for ya. I've never seen a player more obsessed with personal statistics and records than that guy. I honestly think most games he played in he had no idea what was going on with plays that didn't personally involve him. He cared little about team performance and could probably tell you his entire game stats with the game in progress.

The guy literally hung around an extra half dozen plus seasons just to up his career numbers and break a few records. I always admired his talent but despised the way he behaved both on and off the field.

Great ending to the Rangers game tonight.

Down 1 with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth, Hamilton hits a 2-run upper deck walk off HR.

I still think it's crazy from May 4, 1871 to July 9, 2011 there have only been 28 players to reach 3,000 or more hits. Out of all the tens of thousands of players who have stepped on the field. Makes you realize how hard it is to accumulate so many hits in a career. Also to be the fourth youngest, and fourth quickest to 3,000 as well. Players like these don't come around very often.

It won't be anywhere near the same excitement when A-Rod does it in a Yankee uniform.

The way he achieved this feat today made me realize someday I'll be having a catch with my own son, telling him about Jeter and how I saw him play live.

He'll be like "You saw Jeter play? No way!"

Good for him. It's been a tough few days for him nice to see him bounce back.
4-5 to boot, right on Josh.

Ya, 3,000 hits is still one of my favorite milestones in all of sports. I can't help but wonder where Ichiro Suzuki would be had he played his entire career in the U.S. He only came to MLB at the age of 27 and already has 2,342 hits in this league. Add in his Japanese league hits and he has 3,620 career hits in the pros. I know Japanese baseball is a step down but his career avg in MLB is .328 compared to .353 in Japan, not a huge gap. I'll bet he would have at least cracked the top-5 all-time in MLB career hits had he played here his whole career, maybe even top-3. Ichiro is still just 37 and could still reach 3,000 hits here if he plays about 4 more seasons. He's still never finished a major league season batting <.310 and has led the AL in hits in 7 of 10 seasons he's played here. Shame he wastes away in Seattle where he's never had a real opportunity to play in the post-season.
