Dont get me wrong I like Granderson. But I just dont think he derseves it.

Sure his HR's and RBI are good. But what else does he have that makes people think he is an MVP?
Mostly that he plays for the Yankees and has hit a lot of homers. There is not much of a real argument for Granderson as the MVP. The problem with playing on either Boston or New York is that any one player is really not valuable, given the depth of both teams. The Yankees would still be making the playoffs if an average centerfielder had played in place of Granderson this year. Bautista is clearly the best position player in the American League, but his chances to win the MVP appear to be dwindling.

Plus the fact that all of the other players on the Yankees offense are having statistically down years and he has been the one consistent hitter on that team all year. The line up isn't what it was and the pitching staff is patched together and they still have the 3rd best record in baseball.

The Yankees have scored more runs than any other team in baseball. They have all-stars at practically every position in the lineup. The numbers superficially don't look good because most of their hitters now are of the take-and-rake school of hitting, leading to low batting averages and high walks and homers.

Well if they have scored the most runs and have such a good record shouldn't the hands down best hitter be in consideration for MVP voting?
Look at their line up tonight. The only other guys in their prime are Gardner, Teixera, Cano, and Swisher and they are all batting much lower then they usually do. A-Rod has been bad/hurt all year and Jeter has been inconsistent.
The Red Sox line up is much better and Jose Batista has been stealing signs/playing in games that don't matter so what makes him more valuable?

B. Gardner LF
C. Granderson CF
M. Teixeira 1B
R. Cano 2B
N. Swisher RF
J. Posada DH
E. Chavez 3B
R. Martin C
E. Nunez SS

Honestly, this is the 1st year in a while that the MVP in the AL is really wide open.

I think it's hands down going to be Gonzalez. And I hate saying that.

A few months ago, I would have agreed. Now, it's not so clear cut (especially that Elsbury and Pedroia have been getting MVP talk as well so votes would get gutted between those 3).

It was going to be Adrian Gonzalez, until he decided to not hit any homers for about 6 weeks.

Then Michael Young. He doesn't hit homers like the big guns but has been one of the, if not the, most consistently good player in baseball this season. And the fact that he's a utility man and could fill in for anyone on D I think should help his case. I wouldn't be surprised to see him fill in in right for Nelly while he's gone and Beltre gets back to 3rd.

In his last six games, he hit five homers. If he can get north of 130 RBIs, he'll be in the top three again. I haven't been considering Granderson to be the favorite, but if he can finish atop both the RBI and HR totals, then he has to be considered the favorite. Bautista would round out the top 3 as he's tied with the Grandyman with 38 dingers, and leads the AL in six other offensive categories(BB, IBB, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+).

.
We can all def agree on a top 3, Bautista, Granderson & Gonzalez.. When it comes down to it, i think Bautista will win as both Granderson and Gonzalez play on stacked teams with protection in the batting order around them, unlike Bautista whos pretty much doing it all by him self, he will probably end up #1 or #2 in HR's, and the fact the he leads all the other major categories (BB, IBB, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+) should put him over the top.. IMO

I won't go that far. With that said, their recent offensive disappearance is hurting their chances (if they lose two out of 3 to the D-backs, things would definitely be looking grim for the Bay area.

More like the Giants need a sweep. If not, stick a fork in them as they are done.

Excellent post by someone over at the NYYFANs forums:

A player has led his own league in HR, RBI, and R thirty-one times since the MVP award began in 1911, not including this season. For historical reasons, we must eliminate four of these seasons (Ruth in '19, '20, and '21, and Hornsby in '22) because the award was not given in those years. Similarly, we must also eliminate two more seasons (Ruth in '26 and '28) because, until 1931, prior winners could not receive the award again.

This leaves us with twenty-five seasons in which a player led his league in HR, RBI, and R and was eligible to win the MVP. Of those twenty five, nine did not win the MVP award. Those players are:

•Albert Pujols, 2010 (lost to Joey Votto)
•Albert Belle, 1995 (lost to Mo Vaughn)
•Hank Aaron, 1963 (lost to Sandy Koufax)
•Ted Williams, 1947 (lost to Joe DiMaggio)
•Johnny Mize, 1947 (lost to Bob Elliott)
•Bill Nicholson, 1944 (lost to Marty Marion)
•Ted Williams, 1942 (lost to Joe Gordon)
•Lou Gehrig, 1931 (lost to Lefty Grove)
•Chuck Klein, 1931 (lost to Frankie Frisch).
Now, more pertinently, of the thirty-one times that a player has led his league in HR, RBI, and R, he has led both leagues only eleven times. Five of those times must be eliminated due to historical reasons, three for a lack of award (Ruth in '19, '20, and '21) and twice due to ineligibility for having won (Ruth in '26 and '28).

The remaining six seasons are:

•Alex Rodriguez, 2007
•Mickey Mantle, 1956
•Johnny Mize, 1947
•Ted Williams, 1942
•Lou Gehrig, 1931
•Babe Ruth, 1923.
You may notice that there is considerable overlap between those two lists. Mize, Williams, and Gehrig all did not win the MVP award those years! Half of the times that a player has led both leagues in R, HR, and RBI and was eligible for the MVP, he has not won.

While this sort of travesty hasn't happened since '47, it's also only been possible to happen twice since. I'll also point out that only Yankees have ever won the MVP while leading both leagues in those three categories. (Though, of course, their record isn't perfect, as Gehrig lost in '31.)

Of the three snubbed players, your criteria does not fit all of them; Mize was ineligible to lead the American League in much of anything, as he played in the National League. None of them, however, also led their league in triples. In fact, only Gehrig placed among the top ten in his league in triples, tying for second with 15 (the leader was Roy Johnson, with 19).

Take your series and multiply it by at least 2 and that's the Yankees/Redsox series always.
