Phillies clinched a playoff spot after Halladay pitched another gem. Check out how close Halladay and Kershaw's stats are now.

Halladay: 18-5, 2.34 ERA, 211 K's, 23 quality starts
Kershaw: 18-5, 2.36 ERA, 231 K's, 23 quality starts

Almost identical across the board. I'll bet Halladay gets it in a close vote. East Coast bias for the win.

Man as much as i hate the Dodgers, i think Kershaw deserves it, look at the lineup philly has vs the dodgers lineup, philly score much more runs as opposed to the Dodgers...

I don't post in here, but how 'bout them Tigers!

I believe their magic number is already down to 2 after coming back from being down 3 in the 9th today to tie it up and win it in the 10th...their 12th win in a row!

I grew up a Tigers fan and went to countless games there as a kid (in the original Tigers Stadium, haven't been to Comerica yet). I can't remember the last time I was this excited about them, I was pretty young, but remember being pumped about the '84 World Series Champion team and the following few years after with Trammell, Gibson, Whitaker, etc.

Verlander for MVP!

I can easily see Verlander carrying a team to a championship similar to Johnson/Shilling in 2001, Hamels in 2008 or Beckett in 2003. Sometimes all it takes is a red hot starter or two to carry a team all the way.

Halladay leads again in BB/9 (1.2 to 2.1) and K/BB (7.03 t0 4.53)
Kershaw first in H/9 (6.9 to 8.2)
* stats are a start out of date but judging by Halladay's line today the numbers will pretty much be the same.

I'd say Halladay's 7.03 K/BB to Kerhsaw's 4.53 K/BB ratio will do it. Halladay's ERA+ is slightly better given he pitches in a smaller ballpark than Kershaw does in pitcher friendly Chavez Ravine.

I say Halladay but both are equally deserving.

Same here. If I had a vote I'd go:
1. Halladay
2. Kershaw
3. Lee

For me the most important stat for determining Cy Young is ERA. I do think voters factor in W-L record too much. Though the voters did get it right last year giving a 13-12 Felix Hernandez the Cy based on his stellar 2.27 ERA.

Verlander might actually get 3 more starts in the regular season, giving up a possible 25 or 26 wins. No pitcher has cracked 25 wins since Bob Welch in 1990.

Tim Lincecum has a 2.59 ERA and yet he's 13-12. He's been awarded a loss in 7 games that he gave up 3 runs or less in. Kinda reminds me of Felix Hernandez last season when he won the Cy Young with a 2.27 ERA and a 13-12 record.

Felix WHIP and IP (which includes being forced to skip his last scheduled start) were far more impressive last year. He was also second in AL ERA+ (park adjusted and he pitched 60+ more innings than leader Buchholz) and first in AL pitcher WAR.

Lincecum is very good this year, but fourth best ignoring W-L.

I know it's not likely, but it's only because some refuse to vote for pitchers.

Yeah, CC blew his Cy Young chances when he had slight bad run, during which he lost a couple of games in August. Also, I believe Curtis Granderson lost his chance during this slump. While Cano has greatly improved his.

MVP should be an every day player. Cy Young is like an MVP anyways, no reason to be greedy about it.

Verlander could make two more starts before the end of the year at Oakland and against Baltimore. If he wins both, he would have 25 victories on the season, which would be the most since 1990. In fact, just one win would give him the most wins in the AL since 1990 as he has already tied Pedro(1999) and Zito(2002).

IMO, the MVP race is a bit muddled now that the Sox have struggled. Granderson leads the league in Runs Scored and RBI, while Bautista leads in most other offensive categories, except for BA which is still Gonzo. The biggest thing holding Verlander back is comparisons to recent Cy young winners. His numbers are eerily similar to King Felix's last year when he was 16th in MVP voting.

This is reminding me a lot of the year that Pedroia won, because a lot of the expected candidates haven't stepped up to claim the award. IMO, if Verlander finishes strong, then he could take it.

It's not going to happen. The voters are not giving it to a pitcher. Bautista more than anything is going to take it (Granderson is in a bit of a slump).

Cliff Lee with eight shutout innings and 105 pitches so far. I sense another complete game shutout coming on.

edit: one strike away and he gives up a homerun.

If I were a voter I wouldn't vote a pitcher for that award. Pitcher's have their own award called the Cy Young. I, like many people, consider the award as more or less offensive player of the year. The whole idea of "Most Valuable Player" in baseball is incredibly stupid. Baseball is such a team game it's impossible to determine who is actually "most valuable to their team." Why should a player with superior numbers be penalized for playing on a sorry team? It's equally as stupid trying to compare pitchers who throw 34 of so games per year to a position player who plays 162. The offensive player with the best overall numbers deserves the award IMO.

This season I'd probably vote Jose Bautista #1, followed by Gonzalez and Cabrera in the AL. The NL is such a cluster**** I'm not sure who deserves it.
