The Phillies have an 11 game lead over the 2nd best NL team right now. Last team to have that big of a gap atop the standings to end a season was Seattle leading every AL team by 14 games. Of course Seattle got destroyed by the Yankees (who won 21 fewer games) in the playoffs.

Josh homered for the 3rd time in as many games tonight. Adrian hit one of his own. Our bats are flying right now. Our schedule is pretty favorable leading up to our final possibly post season-deciding series against the Angels in a few weeks. I hope we can keep it up.

Why should a player with superior numbers be penalized for playing on a sorry team? It's equally as stupid trying to compare pitchers who throw 34 of so games per year to a position player who plays 162. The offensive player with the best overall numbers deserves the award IMO.

This season I'd probably vote Jose Bautista #1, followed by Gonzalez and Cabrera in the AL. The NL is such a cluster**** I'm not sure who deserves it.
I would say Prince Fielder will win the NL MVP by a landslide.

No way, Matt Kemp is having a way better year.
He's top 5 in the NL in BA, RBI, Runs, HR, and Stolen bases. Really what more could a player do, it's not his fault he's the only star on his team and they're not in playoff contention.

I would vote for Kemp for sure.

...and in the AL my vote is for Bautista.

If a Brewer is going to win it, It'll be Braun, not Fielder. He's the better player.

Matt Kemp should win along with Bautista in the AL

The NL is certainly more interesting in terms of the CY and MVP races.

Halladay and Cliff Lee have very similar numbers. including exactly the same number of innings pitched currently, but playing on the same team may divide voters. BTW, Cole Hamels has a lower WHIP than either of them. That could leave an opening for Clayton Kershaw who is leading the NL in ERA, SO, and wins, he could get to twenty wins with one more. I'm of the opinion that Halladay is the best pitcher, but I'd have to give it to Cliff Lee with his 6 shutouts.

The MVP race is perhaps even more interesting. Kemp probably has the best numbers, but he's on a losing team. Pujols missed a few games, but still leads the league in HRs. Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder play on the same team, and reigning MVP Joey Votto is putting up similar numbers to last year, leading the NL in OBP and OPS. It will probably come down to the two Brewers, and Fielder is the more heavily publicized of the two, so he will probably take it.

It's happened a lot. Here's a list of teams with both the Cy Young and MVP winners.

Quote:
2006 Twins* Justin Morneau, Johan Santana
2005 Cardinals* Albert Pujols, Chris Carpenter
2002 Athletics* Miguel Tejada, Barry Zito
1993 White Sox* Frank Thomas, Jack McDowell
1991 Braves* Terry Pendleton, Tom Glavine
1990 Pirates* Barry Bonds, Doug Drabek
1990 Athletics* Rickey Henderson, Bob Welch
1988 Dodgers* Kirk Gibson, Orel Hershiser
1984 Cubs* Ryne Sandberg, Rick Sutcliffe
1982 Brewers* Robin Yount, Pete Vuckovich
1980 Phillies* Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton
1974 Dodgers* Steve Garvey, Mike Marshall
1967 Red Sox* Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Lonborg
1962 Dodgers Maury Wills, Don Drysdale
1961 Yankees* Roger Maris, Whitey Ford
1960 Pirates* Dick Groat, Vern Law
1959 White Sox* Nellie Fox, Early Wynn
1957 Braves* Hank Aaron, Warren Spahn
However, all of those teams but the 1962 Dodgers went to the postseason, and those Dodgers won 102 games but lost a playoff to the Giants. This year's Dodgers aren't even a .500 team.

Didn't realize how ridiculously consistent Justin Verlander was till I just looked up his game log for the year.

Earned runs he have up in his 5 losses: 2, 3, 3, 1, 4.
Earned runs he gave up in his 4 no-decisions: 3, 3, 3, 6

That's friggin unreal. With a tad bit more run support he could be pushing 30 wins for the season. Only 5 starts all season has he given up >3 Earned Runs.

BTW: Chad, you need to tell Atlanta, they need to stop winning.

Anyone see Brian Wilson in the dugout tonight vs the Rockies? ... Apparently he won one of his bids for the shoes helping out a great charity at the same time....

San Francisco Giants Pitcher Brian Wilson Wears Back to the Future Nike MAG Shoes

Quote:
Created in partnership with Michael J. Fox's Foundation, which seeks a cure for Parkinson's Disease, 150 pairs of the MAG are currently listed for bidding on eBay. Sizes range from 7 to 13, and beginning tonight, 150 pairs will be auctioned off in 24-hour increments over the next ten days. All proceeds will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundatio
Quote:
San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson is known as a guy that marches to the beat of his own drum. If you couldn't gather that from the black-dyed nest on his face that he calls a beard, you'll certainly take notice when you get a glimpse of his footwear for tonight's game against the Colorado Rockies.

Currently nursing an elbow injury, Wilson indeed became the first 2011 Nike MAG auction winner to publicly wear one of his pairs. Apparently, he bid on and won two of them, which is good news because these will no doubt be stained orange from the diamond dirt. However, you can't put a price on how cool it is to wear your MAGs in public - especially when you're not afraid to rough them up a little bit on a baseball field. We shouldn't be surprised that Brian Wilson is that guy.

This years MVP and Cy Young actually have a chance to goto the same person. If Verlander wins 25 games and the Tigers get far in playoff if not win the World Series I can see him getting Series MVP, Cy Young, and MVP award.

BTW If Tigers win tonight They Clinch so yay!
A Cle Loss would also clinch it for them tonight.

It's not being terrified, it's called not being stupid to pitch to him. Anyway, Bautista was 0-18 this year against CC before he got that hit.
