I guess we can talk about AL/NL manager of the year .

AL=I would go with Joe Girardi. know I sound biased, but hear me out. People are going to say "with a payroll that big, you should expect the team to win". But you have to remember that we had many injuries for long stretches but Joe kept the ship steady through choppy waters. If the Rays win the AL wild card, Joe Maddon might steal a few votes.

NL=Kurt Gibson. No question. Nobody in their right mind picked the D-backs to win the AL west (people were picking the Giants to repeat in that division) and he lead them to MLB's elite 8 (playoffs). Mattingly would have to be a runner up for the simple fact that he's lead the Dodgers to a winning record in his 1st season ever as skipper (and considering all the distractions going on with ownership). I know some people are going to say Charlie Manuel should get it, but the season they are having shouldn't be surprising to anyone (not to mention that they didn't have much in the way of injuries).

AL manager of the year is Joe Maddon no matter what happens in my opinion. His team was gutted of key pieces and they're still getting it done. Tied for the wilcard with two games left. If he doesn't win the award for some reason, Jim Leyland will. Girardi can round out the top 3.

Agree with Kirk Gibson on the NL side.

I completely agree with both your choices. Maddon has done an incredible job with his rebuilt roster and not losing the team when they were practically out of contention. Even if they miss the playoffs he's my choice.

It sounds like Ozzie Guillen is going to become the Marlins manager. His contract expires after next season and he's said all along that he wouldn't return without an extension and the White Sox have agreed to let him out of his contract in exchange for two minor league players from the Marlins. Guillen won't manage the White Sox' final two games.

Are the matchups set in the AL now, with the Yankees playing the Wild Card winner regardless of team and the Tigers playing the Rangers?

The matchups are still pretty fluid but the Yankees definitely won't be playing the wild card because they can't play a fellow AL East team in the divisional round. The division champion that ends up with the second best record will play the wild card team. If the season ended today it would be Rangers versus wild card and Yankees versus Tigers, but since the Rangers are only a game ahead and the Tigers have the tiebreaker over them that could change.

Looks like White Sox GM Kenny Williams has finally gotten his wish to get rid of Guillen (but couldn't since Ozzie and Chi Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf are tight).

Yesterday the White Sox told bench coach Joey Cora he would be the interim manager for the final 2 games. Today they fired Cora by text message. Since Cora is expected to join Guillen in Florida the White Sox decided not to have him as the interim manager and instead will give the job to pitching coach Dan Cooper.

Here's a image of the Yankees yearly rookie dress up (in Tampa). This years theme was 80's pop stars (image via Yankees pitching prospect Dellin Betances twitter account):

Anyone else love Ozzie Guillen for his honesty? I sure do. I'm sure a lot of people in sports think these things, but who other than Ozzie would actually say them? The Chicago sports media has a HUGE hole to fill with this guy leaving.

Quote:
“Money is everything besides health. Money is next to that. A lot of people say, ‘Oh, love.’ They don’t know what love means. I guarantee you, if you raise a girl where I grew up and you’ve got no money and she loves you, but you put the same girl with a guy who’s got a lot of money, I’ll bet she’ll love the guy with money. That’s the way it is. I love you, but I’m hungry.

I work in this job for money. I don’t work for nothing. Money. That’s it. The ring? [Bleep] the ring. I don’t even wear my [bleeping] rings. I don’t.’’
Quote:
With the rings, I can’t do [anything] with that,’’ Guillen said according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “But with money, I can go buy me a new boat, I can go buy me a new car, I can dress my wife the way I want to dress her, I can go to Spain. With the ring, I can go to United Airlines and say, ‘Hello, I won the 2005 championship. Can you fly me to Spain?’ Hell, no.
Quote:
You know what I saw a couple days ago?’’ Guillen continued. “I saw a 62-foot boat. That’s what I want, and that’s what I’m going to get. People have to pay me for that. White Sox? I don’t know. Marlins? I don’t know. But somebody will pay. I want to buy my [bleeping] boat. That’s my inspiration. My inspiration is money. That’s everybody’s inspiration.
Every other person in pro sports loves to claim "it's not about the money" and how championships rings are what really matter. Love how Ozzie turns that on it's head. These quotes sound like something Tony Montana would say in Scarface. Fitting he's heading to Miami.

Very stupid comments. It's like saying to his players: "I don't care if you guys win or lose, all I care about is money."

Talk about motivation.

Last day also equals last day of fantasy. It was fun to compete but I don't want to do it again. So much enjoyment of actual games is lost when you are forced to partially root against your team every so often.

IF the Sox tie with the Rays, they are thinking of getting a pitcher-for-a-day as opposed to putting Lackey on the mound:

http://firebrandal.com/2011/09/28/re...ng-bruce-chen/

"So it’s really come down to this. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports that the Red Sox continue to scour the trade market for someone to start a potential Game 163, and one of the potential targets is Royals LHP Bruce Chen.

Before you start kicking and screaming (as I did just a minute ago), let’s try to look at this objectively for a moment. While Chen has been a little homer happy this year (18 in 147 innings), he’s actually been pretty solid; all things considered. With the Royals this season, he’s produced a 12-8 record with a 3.98 ERA, 4.48 FIP, and a 93/48 K/BB ratio.

Is he spectacular? No. Is he an optimal starter for the most important game of the season? Far from it. Still, he’d be the best option should hTheo pull the trigger on the trade. That is, unless you consider either the potentially unstable John Lackey (4.71 FIP) on short rest, or the aging Tim Wakefield (4.99 FIP) as better options. I do not. The good news is that the Rays haven’t fared as well against LHP as they have RHP. From a matchup standpoint, this deal would theoretically work in the Red Sox’s favor.

There’s just one fly in the ointment. Chen is scheduled to pitch for the Royals tonight. Presumably, if a deal is made, the Red Sox would nix that start. The question is: will the front office pull the trigger on a potentially unnecessary trade (and give up a player) prior to the outcome of tonight’s games? If they don’t, will the Royals agree to keep Chen from starting their season’s final game? Of course, these questions are moot if the deal is only for cash considerations.

There’s still a lot to be answered in the next 12 hours or so. Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride."

Tampa should air the Orioles vs. Sox game on the jumbotron during the game tonight. Don't even bother putting up the stats,

Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe said this morning on the Dan Patrick Show that the Red Sox will fire manager Terry Francona if the Red Sox don't make the World Series. The MLB Network's Peter Gammons said something similar last week and most people think Gammons was just repeating what GM Theo Epstein told him. Shaughnessy thinks that Francona has become too nice and buddy-buddy with his players and the team needs an authoritative manager.

Francona gives them two championships and now the Red Sox management have a superiority complex. They've become the New York Yankees.

They said last night that they will be pitching any pitcher who is not on the postseason roster and ran off a list of those pitchers.... also, Arod and Jeter get the night off, not sure about everyone else though

Yankees are apparently starting Delin Betances. You go Yankees... don't make things easy for Boston.

I'm sorry but that's BS. Francona is a very good manager, this collapse notwithstanding. They'd be stupid firing him.
