If the spending trends continue it appears a few other teams might be on par with the Yankees in payroll within a few years. Depends on whether the younger Steinbrenners decide to break the bank in the future. They might have to considering how much teams like LA, Philly and Boston are spending nowadays. Funny thing is I rarely hear people complaining about the Yankees spending anymore. It's like Philly and Boston, and now the Angels replaced them as the "evil empire."
We have a new philosophy of being patient and not making moves just for the sake of making them. It's about making the right ones. I was really hoping that we would get mark Buehrle but Cashman felt his asking price was too high. We're also out of the Gio Gonzalez sweepstakes since the A's were asking for a lot.

As a baseball fan, I'm sad that Pujols is leaving St. Louis. Baseball's past has trived on legends playing their entire carrer's for one franchise. Ernie Banks, Eddie Matthews, Stan Musial, Lou Gerhig, Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn ect. Ever since free agency took over, players like that are rare in baseball. This shouldn't hurt Pujol's legacy but if he stayed with the Cardinals they would've put up a statue of him. I'm sure his number will be retired one day at Busch Stadium but it won't be the same.

My thoughts as a Cubs fan...

Great spoiler.

It is unfortunate that Albert won't be known as Mr. Cardinal at the end of his career (not that he would've anyway..."Stan the Man" holds that honour). It's Great when a HOF'er plays his entire career with one club, but sadly we don't live in that era any longer. Loyalties no longer exist the way they used to. It's ALL about the "green", or blue, purple, green, red and brown up here.

I can't believe that the Fielder market is still going slow. I would've thought that things would heat up today with the Pujols signing.

I have a feeling that the Brewers might have a real shot at keeping him They are probably going to tell Prince that "hey, Pujols is gone. Comeback and we can be a big powerhouse." He'll have to take a pay cut, but with the other markets in play, it probably won't be huge. I still say that an AL team has a better chance to sign him but don't count out Milwaukee just yet.

I do think that many years from now Pujols will be looked at by Cardinals fans as one of the franchise greats and still be looked at fondly. He gave the team 11 great seasons, winning 3 MVP awards and two World Series titles. The sense I'm getting from Cardinals fans is very little ill will towards Pujols and a general acceptance that the team just isn't served best by committing $250 mill plus to one player, even if he is the best in the game.

That's possibly one reason Albert went to the AL (for the DH).

The fact Pujols helped them win 2 championships keeps him in good favor with the Cardinal faithful. I just looked and there is no Angles-Cardinals games this season

Guess he'll be getting his ring through the mail (unless he has a day off and St. Louis is at home so he can go and get it).

I was just taking a look at inter-league all-time stats. Through 2010 Albert Pujols has the highest batting average in either league in inter-league play at .347 (180 for 518).

He will enjoy 9 games in Texas every year, and Houston in 2013 again. Oakland isn't hitter friendly, and Seattle isn't a launching pad either. I think his home run numbers will be down on average from his time in the NL

Was just reading a column on worst free agent signings and came across this:

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2...-adrian-beltre

The Mets could have just paid Bonilla $5.9 million in 2000 but instead decided to defer the payments with 8% annual compound interest over 12 years. Next year Bonilla will get his final payment. In all, he will have made nearly 30 million thanks to this deal. Good job Mets.

Reading the article he's still got 24 $1.2m payments coming his way, he's going to be getting paid all the way until 2035.

He's set for life. Way to luck out.

I'd like to have million dollar retirement checks. Not just talking about baseball retirement, I mean checks into his 70's.

Bonilla also has a $200,000 a year job as a "special assistant" to the MLB Player's Association in which he just has to occasionally talk to players. He is also getting $500,000 per year from the Orioles in deferred compensation until 2015, but his ex-wife gets half of that.

Go work for one of the countless "bowl committees" in college football. There are tons of those guys making high 6-figures for doing nothing.

A constant 8% rate pf return? I work in the financial field and have yet to see anything that can match that return. Gotta love the Mets stupidity.
