http://www.platoonadvantage.com/2012...me-ballot.html

Why is he not in the hall of fame? Second best leadoff hitter of his generation and reached base more than first ballot slam dunk Tony Gwynn. Raines reached base 144 more times than Lou Brock in 876 less plate appearances. At the end of the day, a walk = single more often for a leadoff hitter so Brock having more hits isn't as big as it looks. Not to mention Brock led the league in caught stealing seven times while Raines has the highest stolen base percentage of alltime.
Hat...your position on this makes total sense. Perhaps it's because of the Cocaine he kept in his back pocket (in a chew tin), during games.

My answer to that then is Josh Hamilton. Beloved player for overcoming his drug and alcohol addiction. Why doesn't Raines get the same respect for admitting it early in his playing days and getting clean? Is it because he was still playing while taking cocaine? That's a pretty weak counter argument. His performance suffered in 1982 because of it (no to mention only sliding head first that year because it was in his pocket) and he entered a treatment facility following that season.

[QUOTE=filmnut5;5669874]Great ballplayer with tons of class. Saw him only once on a sports trip to Cali. He caught the game I saw but took infield before the game at 2nd. They were definitely grooming him to play 2nd. I saw him in '91 but don't recall when he officially moved to the middle infield. Here's the stub from that game. He & Bagwell were just youngsters then. [QUOTE]

I can't recall the year that they moved him to 2nd. He also played some outfield too.

I also agree about him being a class act, that is why he is one of my favorite Astros of all time.
I just found out this past weekend that he sits up in the nosebleeds with us regular fans too. I was at the Texans playoff game this past weekend and the friends I took to the game said they saw him after game on our 500 level. Everybody was taking pictures with him.

Even if he played coked out it does;t bother me. In fact it even impresses me a bit. It's hard enough hitting 90+ mph fastballs when clean, let alone coked out. And hell, quite a few athletes played ok on coke. Lawrence Taylor admitted he did it during games.

Not trying to make a counter arguement, HAT, just offering a suggestion.

It didn't slow down Paul Molitor. He loved the white stuff.

Steve Howe used to do it in the bullpen and had other pitchers blocking Lasorda's view from the dugout. Howe's not an HOFer but was a decent pitcher.

Holy $hiiit, just saw the Montero for Pineda trade. If that's 1:1, what a great trade for the Yanks.

My favorite sports drug story was Dock Ellis. He pitched a no-hitter on LSD and remembered almost nothing from the game afterwards. Apparently he used the LSD thinking it was an off day and only at the last minute did he realize he was supposed to pitch that day.

Looks like Hector Noesi was part of the trade too, though I don't know much about him. Still sounds like a good trade for the Yankees.

You're absolutely right. He threw the NO-NO on acid in San Diego. He wasn't scheduled to pitch but had to at the last minute. It wasn't his turn in the rotation so he did some "cids" and figured he'd cruise through the day. He said he couldn't make out the catcher's signs.....What a crazy, but true story.

Err, Chad, I dunno about this. I've tripped at a sports event before (game went to overtime OMG), and I can say that the Dock Ellis story honestly makes no sense at all... even for 1970 or '71. I will say, though, that he definitely would have peaked before taking the field on that evening... the peak occurs between about 1-5 hours after ingestion, and then the next 8 hours are like the "tail." The tail of the trip is kinda fun because you'll feel as though you're starting to return to normal again until you look down at the ground or you look at the pattern on the wall and you're like "Shit. Still tripping."

But cocaine? Shiyit. I've often wondered how many professional athletes use the stuff. I really don't think it would negatively affect an athlete's performance or ability depending on its use... I guess that's the catch; nobody ever seems able to enjoy cocaine recreationally.

Also, one footnote to the Doc Ellis no-hitter: Consider for a minute that there have only ever been ~250 no-no's in the ~150-year history of the MLB... with ~30 teams playing ~160 games each year.

Also note that he gave up like eight walks and several wild pitches in that game, haha.

If you go to the Yankees.com message boards, people are *****ing an moaning about the trade. I mean Montero is good hitter, but people on here are making him like he's the second coming of Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle (not to mention that there was no position for him here). I knew that Montero was never going to stay a Yankee (I didn't expect it to happen this soon). The Yankees future at catcher is Gary Sanchez (he's a few years away though and he's Montero an Romine in one). I'm really surprised that they dealt with Seattle again after the whole Cliff Lee fiasco of a couple years back (and if they ever did, it was going to be for Felix Hernandez).

Listen to this narration...it's wild. It's Ellis doing the narration of that day.

Many pro-athletes have said that using cocaine actually enhances performance, at least for a little while, because it allows the athlete to enter the "zone" much easier on the field. Of course long-term usage leads to nothing but problems.

Exactly. You feel like you're Superman (no pun intended btw). But only for 30 minutes.
I just feel that if I were a boxer, I'd want to do two fat lines of cocaine in the locker room before my fights... Then I'd emerge into the ring feeling like Bruce Willis in Pulp Fiction.

filmnut: Wow, thanks for sharing that; I hadn't seen that before.

Heh... I've never used the stuff but the way you describe it it actually sounds like a lot of fun.

Eh, the second line is never as good as the first, and like I said the euphoric effect fades pretty quickly. So I never really saw the point in using it with any regularity. You feel lucid mentally while under its effect, and so I used it on occasion in social settings, and the conversation seemed particularly stimulating on those nights. I knew a couple guys in college who used to snort sporadic lines while they were up all night studying, though.

He is... Watched many of his games in Seattle

Other thing you won't hear much about looking at his stats and on espn, is just how awful the Seattle offense was, They were dead last in runs scored and by 20 runs! Give him some help and a decent bull pen, I'd guess an All-Star easy.

yea, i dont really look at his W/L becuase of how bad their offense was...which is why they wanted Montero...

Ill take pitching first all day but cant say i was not excited to watch Montero in a full season...
