Rowdy fans. They're the cheapest seats so you would get trouble makers thugs so they decided no more beer there.

Oh ya, forgot about all those issues last year. I remember they were talking about cutting off all alcohol sales by about the mid-point of the game, did they ever do that?

In the old Yankee stadium, they had stopped selling beer in the bleachers. In the new place, they do (even if they didn't, people could now go to other areas of the stadium to buy it because in the old stadium, the bleachers were separate from the rest of the stadium).

They were just talking about Yankee players contracts and I was thinking about A-Rod's contract. We will never see a player get a contract for that amount (or even close to that amount) ever again. No player is worth that money (not even A-Rod). I know many people have been talking about a salary cap in MLB but it will never happen because the players union won't let it happen (the MLB players union is more powerful than either the NBA, NFL or NHL player unions).

Ya, I doubt it would make much difference cutting off sales. When people want to drink they're going to drink. I'm not sure what MLB stadium security is like but I've been to a ton of NFL and NBA games and security is generally lax enough that many people just take their own hidden liquor into the arena/stadium. Plus fans are typically hammered before the game even starts.

In the old stadium, the bleachers were separate from the rest of the stadium, so no one could buy alcohol (or bring it in). In the new Yankee stadium that's not the case since everything is all together now.

In other news, Raul Ibanez is the 1st Yankee to hit a HR into the upper deck in the new stadium (the 1st player to ever do was Russel Branyan when he was with the Mariners in 2010 I believe).

Been looking awhile and finally found the 2012 MLB team salaries. It does appear that in recent years the small market teams are spending a good deal more, narrowing the gap.

The Yankees payroll is well down from it's peak of $209 mill in 2008. At that time their payroll was $71 mill more than any other team. In 2012 the gap is only $23 mill. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing for NY. They seem to be moving back to their strategy in the 90's that worked so well of developing talent from within rather than overpaid veterans.

Another crazy stat. In 2008 the top payroll (Yankees) was 9.5 times than of the lowest payroll team (Florida). In 2012 the difference between highest and lowest payroll team is close to 3-1. Definitely a good sign for the finances of the game.

http://content.usatoday.com/sportsda.../salaries/team

Here's the top-10.

NY Yankees - $198 mill
Philadelphia - 175 mill
Boston - 173 mill
LA Angels - 154 mill
Detroit - 132 mill
Texas - 121 mill
Miami - 118 mill (feels VERY weird seeing that)
San Francisco - 118 mill
St. Louis - 110 mill
Milwaukee - 98 mill

Bottom teams:

San Diego - $55 mill
Oakland - 55 mill
Houston - 61 mill
Kansas City - 61 mill
Pittsburgh - 63 mill
Tampa Bay - 64 mill (nice bang for the buck, as usual)

Problem is that no one goes to see them. If any team needs a new stadium, The Rays are it.

The Rays need a new city, not a new stadium.

Agreed. And Tropicana Field is the worst stadium I've ever watching baseball in. It's extremely fan unfriendly, in addition to being located in St. Pete, rather than within the more logical city of Tampa. Though MLB has never really caught on in this state. The Marlins had two championships in their short history and attendance has always been bad. Even with the nice new stadium this season the Marlins attendance has only been 88% of capacity, pretty bad for so early in a season with a brand new stadium. I could see this Marlins experiment failing and ownership holding a firesale of players as we've seen in the past if attendance keeps falling.

I would rank the A's higher than the Rays in terms of needing a new stadium.

With all the Toronto fans around here, rough way to lose. But as a lifelong Braves fan, it was awesome.

Cordero has been useless for the Jays this year. I mean every time he pitches they end up losing. Even during his short stint as closer this year he blew something like 3 saves in 5 chances.

It doesn't help either that Lawrie couldn't hit a simple sac fly.

I don't know that you can blame Cordero. He gave up a hustle infield single, a sacrifice and then the catcher threw the ball straight into the ground on Heyward's SB.
