Same as a first base umpire does on every call? You can only see the glove or the foot.

The ball and foot are within a few feet at first. Not to mention the ump can usually hear the slam of the ball into the glove since he's so close to the play.

So what do you want him to do here? Look at the foot and assume that the outfielder has already caught the ball? Or watch the outfielder catch it, then look down and estimate when the runner left relative to the current position?

I'm not personally a Mariners fan, but my roommate is and I watch a fair amount of the Mariners games with him on MLB TV, which by the way has very good picture quality for a streaming service on the PS3. Montero has been decent but not great. He had a home run yesterday against Lincecum but it seems like everyone is lighting up Lincecum this year. He was in a bit of a slump for a couple weeks but seems to have gotten over it in the last week. He's a solid defense catcher but I haven't seen anything out of him that makes me think he'll become the stud everyone has been predicting for years.

not wishing any shortcomings from him...but i guess this is better to hear rather then hes crushing home runs etc etc....

i hope he does well...the guy impressed me with his short time on the Yankees....just hope the pitcher we got for him comes around

Yeah, there was no way Clemens could be found guilty because the prosecution did a terrible job. Every witness got killed in cross-examination. Brian McNamee, who was supposed to be the prosecution's star witness, got ripped up by the defense in cross-examination because of all the holes and inconsistencies in his story, and his testimony probably ended up hurting the prosecution because McNamee seemed like a liar. The prosecution should have realized they didn't have a winnable case before this ever went to trial.

I don't think it's this simple. How is the prosecution supposed to know that Pettite would chicken out in the trial?

He was the star witness, not McNamee. And he just did a 180 on them while on the stand.

After that the case had no chance.
