Anyone know what the deal with RA Dickey is? I'd barely heard of him 2010 when he joined the Mets. Looking at his bio he didn't even pitch a full MLB season till he was 28 years old and essentially did nothing until he became a Met at 35. Now he's 37 and in 3 years with the Mets he's 29-23 with a 2.91 ERA and 11-1 with an ERA of 2 this season. Not sure I've ever seen anything like this. Did he only learn the knuckleball recently? Guys don't normally suck for their first decade or so in baseball then hit their prime in their late-30's.

Awesome. Thanks for the video. That's some intense stuff. Far crazier and darker of a story than I imagined Have to wonder how good of a career he could have had if he'd adopted the knuckleball at a younger age.

Part of it is that hitters probably aren't used to hitting a good knuckleball these days, and Dickey is throwing it hard (80+ mph). I remember watching Dickey against the Braves last year and his command/control were more inconsistent. He had good stuff last year but caught some bad breaks/lost some close games, I think (he was playing on the Mets after all).

He is on one of the great rolls of all-time right now, though. Back-to-back one-hitters. 43 innings in a row without an earned run.

Freddy Galvis banned for 50 games

Philadelphia Phillies rookie infielder Freddy Galvis was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball on Tuesday for testing positive for a banned substance.

Galvis is currently on the disabled list with a back injury and will begin serving his suspension immediately. MLB said Galvis tested positive for a metabolite of Clostebol, a performance-enhancing substance.

"A trace amount of a banned substance -- 80 parts in a trillion -- was detected in my urine sample," Galvis said in a statement. "I am extremely disappointed in what has transpired. I cannot understand how even this tiny particle of a banned substance got into my body.

"I have not and never would knowingly use anything illegal to enhance my performance. I have always tried to follow the team's strength and conditioning methods, listen to the trainers, work out hard and eat right. Unfortunately, the rules are the rules and I will be suspended."

Galvis, listed at 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, had filled in nicely for injured second baseman Chase Utley before getting hurt. He was batting .226 with three homers, 15 doubles and 24 RBIs. It's likely Galvis will be on the DL for the duration of his suspension.

Kelly Johnson...one of the most useless players I've seen.
Probably has the worst plate discipline in the league (2nd in Strikeouts behind Dunn).
He's one of those players that will hit a HR when his team is already leading 10-0 and then will strikeout when the game is on the line.
What makes matters worse is that the Jays traded away A. Hill for him and Aaron is tearing it up with the D-Backs.

They need to bench Johnson he's an absolute liability.

Home plate umpire Jerry Layne struck by broken bat, avoids serious injury (Video)

It seems like every season there's a two or three week stretch where broken bats and the dangers they create for players, umpires and fans, becomes the hot topic around baseball.

It looks like we're entering that stretch right now, because just two days after Chicago Cubs pitcher Casey Coleman was struck by a shattered projectile sixty feet from home plate, umpire Jerry Layne, who was behind the plate to begin Minnesota's 5-4 win in Cincinnati on Friday night, was struck in the jaw by the broken bat of Devin Mesoraco.

Hey im pretty happy where were at right now, that's all I meant, Giants were 7.5 games back a month ago, cut it down to 3 games, and getting closer, hopefully we'll be even come all star break, AND Giants are taking over the division soon...
