Kris Medlen for NL Cy Young!

5-0 (team is 6-0; in fact, they've won his last 17 starts now) with a 0.66 ERA in his 6 starts. 28.1 straight scoreless innings after tonight's game.

Oh, and Kimbrel got his first save (and save opportunity) in 25 days!

Also, apparently the Braves are 67-0 when they lead after 8. Next best in the NL are the Pirates (61-0) and Padres (54-0).

Exactly. They make it seem like it's cheating. The only people they should be mad at is their own team's ownership for not spending money.

Never said it was cheating

Some teams are not capable of spending that type of money, you guys think it's fair for one team to have a $150M+ payroll vs another team that has $75M payroll??? That's what I mean by unfair... But all power to your teams, I sure wouldn't mind if we could do it... But it would still be an unfair advantage

Blame your team's GM/ownership and the fans (why the fans? because if they don't show up to the games, the team isn't going to get the money to spend).

Not every team can be in a market like NY.

That's a poor excuse. If the fans show up to the games (I'm looking at you Ray's fans), they would help the team more. Money doesn't magically appear out of nowhere to sports teams. The Mets are in NY and they are looking to cut payroll. Why? people are not showing up to the games.

Not an excuse, fact. Even if the rays sold out every game, we wouldn't generate the revenue NY does. As far as ray fans, tampa is all relocated northerners. Red sox/yankee fans. Very few natives and seeing the franchise is 15 yrs old, not much support. Yet we given you a run for the pennant the last 5 years.

It's not. Look at the television contracts being signed by LA and NY teams. Lots of areas just don't have the market to support the payouts.

Many of these "small market" teams make big profits when that info leaks to the public. We have far too many deadbeat owners perfectly content fielding terrible teams to maximize profits.

The idea that some of these are even "small market" is highly questionable. When do you ever hear the Steelers referred to as "small market"? Never. And yet the Pirates always get called small market to justify a low payroll and crappy team. I don't like excessive payrolls either, but that's only part of the problem with MLB finances. Ever since they Yankees payroll exploded in the early-00's they've actually won just one title. Oddly enough it seems Yankee spending has an inverse relationship to success. And if you look at the top and bottom MLB payrolls the gap is a good deal smaller than it once was with the Yankees payroll actually falling in recent years.

Have to agree that market size, while it might make it easier to buy good players, it is not an excuse for a bad team. You can build a great team on a lower budget with a talented GM, and owner who supports him. It's all about chemistry. When the organization sucks, you lose irrespective (Boston, Dodgers with McCord).

I really came here to say the the Tigers got robbed last night by the worst luck ever. Fielder's ninth inning long foul ball was really a home run. I'm not accusing the umps of doing anything wrong. They reviewed the play, and the video evidence was, I agree, not enough to overturn. But, it was clear to me that the one angle showed the ball going on the fair side of the pole. The angle from left field, which was a close-up, looked like the ball passed behind the pole, but after careful study, you can see that the ball traversed almost the exact width of the foul pole between video frames. That is just sh** luck. It also does not excuse them from losing a game they scored 8 runs in.

Some of these umps are out of control. I'm no fan of Harper but throwing him out because he threw his helmet at first is just ridiculous. Especially during a pennant run.

The umpires have been singling Harper out all season, probably because he's a 19-year-old rookie. His strike zone has been all over the map, even for a rookie.

MLB would deny it, but it would be fairly simple to have something like FoxTrax calling balls and strikes. Wouldn't be perfect either, but a lot more consistent. Players wouldn't like it though, especially veteran pitchers and catchers who know how to manipulate the calls.

I don't think that will ever happen, it would change the balance of the game too much. One of the reasons a perfectly uniform, machine-called strike zone has not been seriously considered is how quickly the hitters would adapt to one strike zone. It would make the offensive levels of the steroid era look tame. Every pitcher but knuckleball pitchers would be seriously hurt.

Chalk up another win for the old "insanity" defense.

Greg Halman's brother acquitted

AMSTERDAM -- A Dutch court acquitted the brother of Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman on Thursday of stabbing the baseball star to death last year, saying he was temporarily insane at the time.

Rotterdam District said Jason Halman "was in a state of psychosis at the time of the stabbing" and could therefore not be held accountable for his actions.

Greg Halman hit .230 in 35 games for the Mariners in 2011 and made starts at all three outfield positions before being optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

The 24-year-old Halman died after being stabbed in the neck on Nov. 21 at an apartment in Rotterdam, reportedly following an argument over loud music.

In a written statement, the court said Jason Halman was allowed to walk free after psychiatric and psychological assessments found "there is only a remote chance of any reoccurrence; it is well possible that the psychosis has been a singular event."

Halman had already been released from custody two weeks ago after prosecutors joined defense attorneys in saying that he should be acquitted on mental health grounds.

Born in the city of Haarlem, Greg Halman played in the Dutch Pro League and was part of the gold-medal winning Dutch squad at the 2007 European Championship and played for the Netherlands at the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

We have a big series this weekend against the O's (basically every series in Sept is a big series for us since we're facing AL east foes in every series except 2). Who would have thought back in April that a Sept series between the Yanks and O's would be a battle for 1st place in the AL east for both teams?

I do remember the ALCS in October 1996, when that stupid kid snatched the ball away from Tarasco...
