Got the division lead back thanks to a quality start by Hughes. If we can take the next two, I will feel much better about rest of the season.

125 R 47 HR 130 RBI 19 SB (19-4) average over the life of that contract. Huge numbers and only missing 20 total games in seven seasons.


Because of the postseason it wasn't a slam dunk but to say it was terrible is pretty harsh. Those Yankees teams outside Jeter pretty much sucked in the postseason from 2004-2007.

I'd agree on A-Rod for the most part. He's a tool and not exactly clutch, but still a terrific player whose earned his keep. Still though, I don't think it's a coincidence the Yankees won 4 championships in the 8 years prior to his arrival and has since won just 1 championship in his 8 years there.

The Nats are shutting Strasburg down for the season. Davey Johnson said shutting him down now is more mental than physical:

"To be honest with you, I think he just is thinking too much about the decision when we're going to shut him down," Johnson said Friday night. "And he kind of wore it. He didn't like it. But that's the way it is."

New York pub changes its name to honor noted Mets foil Chipper Jones

Foley's NY, a baseball-mad bar in Manhattan that's home to the Irish-American Baseball Hall of Fame, is changing its name to "Chipper's" for the three-game series and will be offering 10 different varieties of chips in his honor.

Sometimes you have to tip your cap to your opponent. There are few opponents in recent memory who have been as successful as Chipper Jones a visiting player in New York City. While Chipper has broken the hearts of many Mets fans over the years, New Yorkers are as knowledgeable as anyone and they know greatness when they see it -- even when it resulted in disappointment for their hometown team.

There is going to be huge second-guessing on the part of everyone if the Nats don't win the World Series this year and they never make it back. So many great players have only played in one or two playoff series, much less a World Series. I guess that will change with baseball allowing half the league in the playoffs now, but I'm very happy as a Braves' fan the Nats are shutting him down.

Oftentimes the window for a title in sports so is very short. This is such a risky decision by the franchise.

He's basically been out for a couple weeks now anyway with the way he's played. Just a shadow of his former self from a few months ago before he got hurt. Definitely been playing hurt.

this ain't the old Montreal Expos that you are talking about here, and they are NOT going to dump 2/3 of the roster at the end of the year. They are a young team with almost no holes left to be filled. And remember, this record that they have acquired this season, they accomplished with many of their star players spending a lot of time on the DL(Werth, Zimmerman, Morse, Desmond and their starting catcher.) Even their fans over on their forums agree with this decision. It's only the sports commentators that seem to have a problem with this.

Duffy, don't try and oversimplify things. Baseball is still the hardest sport to make the playoffs consistently. Countless quality teams have missed the playoffs even in the wild card era. On paper means very little.

I personally agree with other members, it's a terrible decision because you simply don't know what the future holds.
