Are you sure? They'd actually have a 1 game playoff for the division title followed by another one for the loser in the Wild Card game?

Not sure why I thought they only played each other 10 times.

Yup. In the old style, they'd just use a tiebreaker. But now since it actually makes a real difference, they don't settle anything on a simple tiebreaker.

From wikipedia, but still...

Beginning in the 2012 season, two teams that are tied for a division championship play a tie breaking game even if both teams have already qualified for the postseason (meaning one of them would be awarded a wild card berth).

His batting average has dipped a good bit, but it's amazing the season Freddie Freeman has managed to put together without too much national attention.

22 HRs, 93 RBIs. Definitely the Braves MVP.

The McCourts are back in the news as Jamie McCourt is trying to get their divorce settlement thrown out.

Quote:
The ex-wife of former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has filed a motion to set aside the couple's divorce settlement, claiming he committed fraud by vastly understating the team's value.

"Mr. McCourt got about 93% of the family assets, and Mrs. McCourt got about 7%," Fields said by phone. "We would've much preferred to have this massive imbalance resolved with some modification, but we got no response to that approach. We didn't want to have more family litigation, but now it's up to the court."

The motion filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court claims Frank McCourt misrepresented the couple's Dodgers assets as worth less than $300 million during their protracted divorce.

The pair's marriage was dissolved in October 2010, and Jamie McCourt received $131 million. The new court papers claim that after the sale and subtraction of relevant debts, Frank McCourt's assets turned out to be worth $1.7 billion, well over 10 times the amount Jamie McCourt received.

Well she might have a point if the Dodgers really were valued at $300 mill and they were sold for $2 bill. I know nobody really thought they'd sell it for $2 bill but there was no way in hell $300 mill was even close to what they were worth.

Braves are up 3-0 on Miami. Unfortunately the Phillies aren't giving us any help at the moment, trailing Washington 5-3.

I'm starting to wonder if he might steal the Cy Young. There really is no real frontrunner in the NL. There are no jaw dropping starter numbers this year and the best ERA is Dickey with a modest 2.66 with several other starters bunched up just behind him. One more win and Dickey gets his 20th win which would help his cause.

Kimbrel has 40 saves with an ERA of 1.04. He hasn't even given up a run in September. I could see an opening for Kimbrel to win it.

Why the hell couldn't we have had Kimbrel in the 90's-early 00's? We could have won a couple more championships! Oh well, I'm glad to have him now.

He's put up ridiculously unheard of numbers, but without 50 saves, I don't think he has a chance to win. I do think he'll be top 3 though.

Rodney has been equally as good in the AL. He has a 0.66 ERA and 0.77 WHIP.

Hard to say. These are the last few NL relievers who won a Cy Young.

Eric Gagne - 55 saves
Mark Davis - 44 saves
Steve Bedrosian - 40 saves

Hard to believe Mariano Rivera never won the award. He finished 2nd once and 3rd several times. I suppose that's mainly because the AL had a few extremely dominant starters constantly winning the award - Pedro Martinez, Clemens, Santana etc when Rivera was at his best.

Maybe, but... (from a week ago, so some numbers have changed some)

Quote:
Strikeouts: 105 in 57 1/3 IP, the best strikeout ratio ever (16.5/9 IP)
Opponent AVG.: .128, the lowest against any pitcher since 1900
Opponent OPS: .368, the lowest against any pitcher in the expansion era
WHIP: 0.68, best by any National League reliever since 1900
Percentage of hitters struck out: 49.5 pct., best in live-ball era
Strikeout-to-hit ratio: 105 whiffs, 25 hits (4.2), best of all time

And then there's the other stuff. With runners on base, he's faced 71 hitters -- and allowed a hit to four of them. … With runners in scoring position, he's faced 29 hitters -- and given up a hit to one of them. … Of his past 125 outs, 81 of them have come on strikeouts. … He's had eight outings in which he struck out all three hitters he's faced -- more than Chapman, Fernando Rodney, Jonathan Papelbon, Rafael Soriano, Jim Johnson and Jason Motte combined. … And have we mentioned this man has whiffed 11 more hitters for the season than his rotation amigo, Tim Hudson -- but in 107 1/3 fewer innings?
To the next to last point there, today he had an outing where he struck out all four batters he faced in one inning

How did the Rangers, who've been dominating all year, get themselves into a situation where they have what is practically a must-win game with only 7 games to go in the season, 6 games remaining on the road?

How does the #1 offense in baseball go through LONG stretches where they can't score more than 2-3 runs per game? Why are they so awful at bringing home people from 3rd with less than 2 outs? Why do they get picked off the bases so frequently?

This Rangers team is so aggravating. When they are on they can put up 8 runs in 4 innings against a Jered Weaver. When they aren't they get manhandled by a pitcher with a 6+ ERA and a 2.5 WHIP.

I really hope whoever ends up with Hamilton is ready for the crazy crap like his theory that blue eyes make it hard for him to hit during the day or what morphs from a Sinus headache into a caffeine/energy drink overdose over a span of a week.

60 IP is quite on the low end though to win. Those guys threw far more innings by comparison.

In any event, I just don't see it/nor do I want to. What Dickey has done this year is astonishing. His K/9 I believe is the highest all-time in a season for a knuckle ball thrower and he also has several shutouts as well.

Manager firings & hirings:

The Indians have fired Manny Acta. Bench coach Sandy Alomar will manage the team for the rest of the year and has a good shot at getting the gig full time.

The Astros have hired Nationals third base coach Bo Porter as their new manager. Porter will stay with the Nationals for the remainder of the season.

What's the point in firing someone at this stage? Just wait a few more games. It seems kind of petty.
