This coming from a fan of the team who signed Barry Zito to a 7 year $126 million dollar contract. The whole outspending everyone argument is tiring and irrelevant. If a team could just throw money at a team, then the Yankees and Phillies would meet in the World Series every year. Good job to the Tigers. This is the first time in my life that I've ever seen the Yankees swept from the playoffs.

Big offseason coming up. If we could trade A-Rod and eat 70% of the contract, I'd do it. Swisher is done. See ya Ichiro. Thanks for a good effort but no reason to resign you. Resign Kuroda to a 2 year $22 million contract w/ a team option for a third. Welcome back a healthy Gardy. I've been saying trade Granderson, but I'd let him come back for one more year. Get rid of Mendoza, oops I mean Martin. Bring back Ibanez. He's earned himself a spot on the team. Welcome Andy back for another year. Let Andruw and Chavez walk. We need some bench bats who are not over the hill. I think the rotation is set. C.C., Kuroda, Andy, Hughes, and Nova/Phelps/Pineda.

Lmao, Giants won there championship with GREAT drafting and a GREAT farm system, not from buying there players .. You want to compare one stupid contract the Giants made to the countless the Yankees have given out? I would do that, but I could be here all night ...

I love it when teams spend like crazy and only to flame out early, ie, Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies, Red Sox.... Keep spending that money

Where's the fire Girardi part?

I know those who hate the Yankees always say they suck but that was one of the worst ALCS performances ever. They just plain sucked.

I think the Yankees waited a bit too long. Had they put A-Rod on the trade block a few months ago they probably could have pawned him off on the Dodgers with just about all of his contract.

Who cares how you win a championship as long as you win one? Point was the Giants handed out stupid money just like the Yankees, so your team is not immune to the same argument you are trying to make. If you were say a Pirates/Rays fan, then you might have a leg to stand on, but you're not.

It's hard to draft great when you're consistently drafting at the very back end of the draft every year. Price of being a contender for 16 straight years. I don't understand why people think it's some kind of a diss when you spend a lot and make it to the ALCS, which I wouldn't consider "flaming out early." It doesn't make any sense. Some teams spend to field their team and some teams can't/won't. Championships are won by both formulas.

I don't see how you can fire Girardi. I don't see him as the problem. It's the players that have to perform, not the manager.

I don't like him and think he wouldn't do s* if he didn't have stacks of cash getting him players, but honestly a GM will do more than any manager (unless he's a total poison pill like BV over in Boston). Showalter for instance managed above his talent.

Yankees need to cut Cashman loose and beg Billy Beane to come

I think it's diminishing results. The Yankees payroll actually wasn't THAT high between the mid-90's-early 00's when they were most successful and won 4 championships. Since their payroll exploded in 2001 they have one championship. If anything there seems to be a bizarre inverse relationship between championships won and payroll for the Yankees. Although I believe their payroll has actually declined a bit in the last few seasons. They peaked at around $210 mill and I think they're around $200 mill or slightly below today.

TBH, they've almost always had the highest payroll in the league even in the mid 90's. We won one in 2009 with a massive payroll, so we've had tangible results with having a large payroll.

The starting rotation is fairly solid. Throw out this last game and I don't think a starter gave up more than 3 earned runs. That's pretty good and a solid foundation to build on next year. The lineup needs an overhaul. I'm still pissed at Cashman for trading Montero for Pineda. He was made for the short porch .

Billy Beane has had teams try to throw huge amounts of cash at him before and turned them down. Namely the Red Sox in back in 2002 whose offer he rejected. No way he'd consider the Yankees.

I don't think Cashman is a bad GM. He just had his hands tied for a very long time when Steinbrenner was alive. It's hard for any GM to work in that kind of environment.

Near the top, yes. But between 1985 and around 2000 there were quite a few teams even or slightly ahead of them in payroll. Here's a handy graph. The spike between 2000 and 2005 is incredible. Since then the gap has been steadily narrowing. The graph goes to 2010, and since 2010 teams like Philly and Boston closed the gap quite a bit more.

http://www.graphoftheweek.org/2012/0...-everyone.html

As hard as it is to believe nowadays the Kansas City Royals actually had the highest payroll in MLB at one point in the 1980's.

Since the Yankees are out of it, I'm rooting for the Cardinals. It would be pretty cool to see another team since the Yankees win back to back World Series. They could also stick it to Pujols as well. And for you Tigers fans, you played and lost to the Cardinals the last time you made it to the WS. Could there be another repeat?

This has to be the first time in a very long time that both World Series teams won fewer than 90 regular season games. Both St. Louis and Detroit went 88-74 in the regular season. I can't recall it happening in my lifetime. Of course it was more rare since up until 1994 only 4 teams even made the playoffs. Now its watered down with 10 teams making it.

Why not support the American League?

Anyway, I'm not too concerned about what happened 6 years ago. The current Tigers team is better than the 2006 team (especially the starting pitching staff).

If they keep playing the way they have been, they're going to be tough to beat.
