Lots of scouts are saying they actually got a pretty good return.

Yeah, the Marlins really didn't get a terrible deal in the trade. They received two major league shortstops, a #3 starter, and prospects, while getting rid of an overpaid Mark Buehrle, the expiring contract of the injury-prone Josh Johnson, and Jose Reyes. This deal wouldn't look terrible if it the Marlins hadn't just moved into a new stadium that was largely paid for by taxpayer money. I would be shocked if this trade is vetoed, as MLB hasn't vetoed a trade since 1976.

Theres more to it then just the trade tho, Loria made a fool of Selig and MLB after getting them to lobby for a new Marlins stadium, got all these new TV deals and TV revenue and is basically unloading and pocketing the cash. Fans are pissed and MLB may be forced to step in here.

Quote:
11:45PM EST November 15. 2012 - CHICAGO — Bud Selig knows how you feel South Florida.

He also feels like a sucker.

The commissioner and members of his office spent hours with Florida politicians lobbying for nearly a decade to get the Marlins a new ballpark. He pleaded with taxpayers to approve a sales tax to fund their new $634 million retractable-roof stadium, even with a $2.4 billion service debt.

NIGHTENGALE: Many burned by Marlins fire sale

Now, he finds out the same way you do that owner Jeffrey Loria is conducting yet another fire sale, shedding $160 million in salaries with his 12-player trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.

And you, as Marlins fans, can't do a damn thing but stay home and show your disgust by refusing to give Loria any more of your salary.

Selig's vengeance?

MORE: Marlins fans fall hook, line and stinker

He is making Loria sweat.

Selig said Thursday he's reviewing the trade with the Blue Jays, giving the perception he's considering vetoing the deal.

Don't punish the Blue Jays and their fans. Take the team away from him.

Heck, this is a much better deal than what the Red Sox got in the Dodgers trade.

Very well said. This trade will go through, it's just being looked at first. Like fate said, the MLB hasn't vetoed a trade since the mid 70's.

I am surprised people feel it'd be "punishing" the Jays.

I largely feel the same way here as I did in the Boston trade.

Those Boston guys did nothing, why are they going to make the Dodgers so much better?

Make the obvious substitutions.

They're not vetoing it because it's unbalanced. They'd be vetoing it to spite Loria and "thank" the Marlin "fans". All 12 of them are really pissed.

People are pissed because they were lied to again. Loria did this crap before with the Expos, now he managed to steal taxpayer money get a new stadium and all revenues, now hes going to pocket the money rather then invest as he promised to do. The problem is I don't believe MLB can force him to sell the team, they would have to make him want to o that which would essentially be by vetoing every dump the guy tries to do.

MLB forced him to sell because the team couldn't be divided by divorce, and due to the divorce they couldn't negotiate new TV rights. entirely different situation.

And here's Selig's official statement. Replace Dodgers with Marlins (minus the prestigious bit) and McCourt with Loria.

Quote:
Pursuant to my authority as Commissioner, I informed Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt today that I will appoint a representative to oversee all aspects of the business and the day-to-day operations of the Club. I have taken this action because of my deep concerns regarding the finances and operations of the Dodgers and to protect the best interests of the Club, its great fans and all of Major League Baseball. My office will continue its thorough investigation into the operations and finances of the Dodgers and related entities during the period of Mr. McCourt's ownership. I will announce the name of my representative in the next several days.

The Dodgers have been one of the most prestigious franchises in all of sports, and we owe it to their legion of loyal fans to ensure that this club is being operated properly now and will be guided appropriately in the future.

With the Dodgers situation the team couldn't even afford to make their payroll and had to get a loan from Fox. It had nothing to do with how the team was run, it was purely about money regardless of how Selig worded the statement. MLB does not have a salary floor and the Marlins stadium agreement doesn't say or imply that they will spend money, so the team did nothing against MLB rules. If the city/county wanted the team to spend money they could have put a clause in the lease that the team must stay in the top half of payroll but they didn't and they shouldn't be surprised when the owner got rid of all their highly-paid players when attendance was nowhere near what they projected.

yes I understand what the statement from MLB said from the get go, my question to you is are the circumstances the same can Loria not make payroll due to his finances being locked due to a divorce settlement? MLB never would have taken the team from him had things not went the way they did with his divorce

Listened to a little of Jim Rome today. He started running his mouth about how he thinks Trout got robbed of the MVP. No surprise as he's an Angels fan. Pretty much everyone calling the show is calling him out on it. The right guy won the award.

I thought Loria was doing fine financially and only pulled this crap because he's a tightwad with no interest in fielding a competitive team.

That's exactly what it is. Miami sports fans are extremely fickle and only care about a team that's winning (and even that's somewhat questionable) so it doesn't make sense to spend $100 million on a team that will sell 24,000 tickets a game when he can spend $30 million on a team that will sell 20,000 tickets a game. With the way baseball shares revenue the Marlins will be one of the most profitable teams next year because as leaked financials have shown baseball punishes the teams that spend big while rewarding the low payroll teams.

Except the team got down early and he fired the manager had a massive firesale and never even really bothered to give the team a chance to gel. had this been the end of next year or the year after sure id agree but 6 months he payed players for 6 months then dumped the team the first year of the new ball park. Fans don't give a crap about a ballpark unless the team wins why would I go waste my money on losers.

Plus FL is a transient state. Everyone is from somewhere else and have no loyalty to the local team. Hence the poor turnout at rays games even with an exciting, winning team.
