Just heard an interesting piece from Dale Murphy about the WBC. We all know you don't see the experienced superstars because they have no incentive to be there. But why do you often only see a handful of the mid-level superstars? Teams will usually only purchase insurance for their most expensive players because of how expensive the insurance can be. Well, with the WBC, if a player's contract is not covered, MLB has to put up money to cover the contract for the duration of the WBC, so MLB has to balance competition with costs.

It feels weird hearing the Orioles and Jays fans with high expectations. First time I've seen that since about the mid-90's when I was a kid. Good to see though. I'm happy the AL East isn't just the Yankees and Red Sox anymore.

I can tell you it feels really good too. I've always been an Orioles fan, but by the time I really started to follow them, they had hit rock bottom. Now, I can fully admit that I haven't been this proud to be an O's fan since probably the beginning of the 2005 season.

Ouch Tigers got mauled by Torontos B/C team 10-3 yesterday.

In one of those Grapefruit League games where things can get out of hand, things got out of hand Saturday for the Tigers as they lost, 10-3, to the Blue Jays in Detroit's spring-training home opener at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Three pitchers who likely won't figure in the Tigers' immediate plans — Shawn Hill, Melvin Mercedes, and Ryan Robowski — were sacked for all 10 runs.

"Some pitchers didn't command the ball very well," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland, who was more focused on Saturday's crowd (8,025) and its energy. "They were just nervous. Wild."

Tigers regulars had a more comfortable time in a game that had its artistic moments.

Prince Fielder hit a mammoth two-run home run over the indoor batting facility, a blast that likely traveled 430 feet or more. Miguel Cabrera added another tape-measure blow when he reached the top of the berm in left-center field.

Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez pitched a scoreless two innings, while the day's big pitching story — right-handed closer candidate Bruce Rondon's debut — was eventful.

Rondon struck out two Jays batters with his 100-mph-plus fastball during his fifth-inning shift. He also walked a batter and gave up Adam Lind's broken-bat double that carried against the right-center-field fence.

But he also coaxed a weak pop-up to third as the Jays avoided scoring.

The Tigers are 1-1 on the Grapefruit League season. They play again Sunday at Marchant Stadium when they meet the Phillies.

O's first there were no nats when I grew up. But I go to more nats games than O's games cause its closer. Makes it easier too since they're in different leagues.
