Not a Yankees fan at all (actually just typing their name makes me want to vomit), but Good Lord. Are they falling apart this Spring, or what? It's gotten to the point of being ugly. Now with Mark Texeira going down for at least 8 weeks today.

Looks like this might be Mariano Rivera's final year. Guess I should see about getting some tickets for the Yankees games in KC. Not a Yankee fan, but I respect the hell out of Rivera and Jeter.

Quote:
New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will announce Saturday that he will retire after the coming season, sources confirmed for ESPN.

Rivera, 43 and Major League Baseball's all-time leader in saves with 608, will make his intentions known at a news conference at 10 a.m. ET in Tampa, Fla. He then will make his spring debut against the Atlanta Braves.

Wow. Brewers GM was stung by a scorpion in his Arizona condo Wednesday.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/spring2013/st...scorpion-sting

Quote:
Armed only with tissue paper, Brewers general manager Doug Melvin tried to get rid of a bug inside his condominium Wednesday. The bug turned out to be a scorpion, which stung him.

Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he spent several hours being treated at a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital. The sting, which occurred on the middle finger of his left hand, sent numbness spiraling up his arm, the newspaper reported.

"My arm is still totally numb," Melvin told the Journal Sentinel on Thursday morning at the Brewers' spring training complex.

"It stung me right through the Kleenex. My arm started swelling, and then the numbness started going up my arm, like when you hit your funny bone. I was wondering if it might go all the way up my arm and go to my heart. I got nervous when it got up to my shoulder, so I went to the emergency room."

Melvin said that when he started to feel numbness spread up his arm, he Googled "scorpion stings." Whatever he discovered was enough to persuade him to go to the hospital.

"They gave me [pain medication] and just watched me for a couple of hours," Melvin told the Journal Sentinel. "They said your vision can go blurry from that. It was more an education on it, but my arm is still numb. First off, they tell you it's not fatal. But you can have an allergic reaction to it and need an anti-venom injection."

It must have been a Big Scorpion then cause a little one would have killed him with how long it looks like it took him to get to the hospital. Dunno where he gets they cant kill you lol.

Quote:
There are 1,000 reported deaths from scorpion stings in Mexico every year (see https://login.medscape.com/files/msc.../no_cookie.jsp). In the United States, over 13,000 stings reported annually. A large number of them happened to be non-lethal. It is estimated that one death a year occurs in Arizona from scorpion stings. In the entire world, there are 1,500 species of Scorpion; 50 are lethal to humans. Each has a different and unique sting that gives a variety of painful features. Some will not sting at all but merely bite.

The painful sting may introduce lethal venom to your body. A person's body weight and allergies determine if the venom will be lethal.

So small scorpions are the deadlier kind? Never knew. Then again scorpions are probably the only deadly animal we (I think) don't get in Florida. We even have a Boa problem now thanks to fools dumping them in the Everglades.

Nah there venom is more lethal Big can still kill but I guess smaller ones pack a serious punch, then again theres a lot of factors that go into it

I saw about that on a show on Animal Planet. It's amazing how quickly the Python and Boa populations are growing. It's really screwing up the echo system down there.

It's mainly due to idiots who either imported or bought those things at some exotic pet show. Then when the Boas get too big (as they always do) the people think it's a smart idea to just drop them off at the Everglades either not knowing or caring that the things aren't native and can pretty much kill any native species, alligators included. No matter how hard the state has worked to kill them off, often with bounties they just grow in population. They seem to be migrating northwards too and have now been spotted as far north as Gainesville.

Stayed at Hotel 71 (many of their rooms offer views of the Chicago River) in the loop for my most recent trip to Wrigley... Took the CTA to/from the ballpark, couldn't have asked for a better experience.

How much u want to spend on a hotel is the question. I can get you the info for the hotel we stayed at when we were there last year, very nice hotel right across the street from house of blues.

Yeah. I think it'd be cool to stay in the city and ride the train, but I don't know that I want to pay anywhere near the prices they want. It's currently just me going, so getting a $150+/night hotel makes it a damn expensive weekend trip for a baseball game.

I did find that they run a shuttle from a DeVry down the road that's only $6, so I could stay a few hours outside the city like I'm doing for the White Sox game, assuming I can get into that lot and on one of the earlier buses.

Didn't realize it until now but when Mariano Rivera retires the number 42 will be gone for good in MLB as the league retired the number for Jackie Robinson. At least it's a great player who is the last #42 and not some scrub.

Just out of curiosity I looked up some of the MLB stats on retired numbers.

Numbers 5 and 20 are retired by the most teams with nine for each.

Between the number 1-50 there are just three numbers not retired by any team - 36, 46 and 48.

Teams with ten or more retired numbers:

NY Yankees - 16
St. Louis - 12
LA Dodgers - 10
Cincinnati - 10

Braves will join that list soon.

They currently have 9 (3-Murphy, 6-Cox, 21-Spahn, 29-Smoltz, 31-Maddux, 35-Neikro, 41-Matthews, 44-Aaron and 47-Glavine). And #10 will be #10.

What's crazy there is that half of them will have been together (Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine and Chip all playing for Cox *technically Murphy did as well*)

WBC got interesting today between Canada and Mexico (video at link):

Quote:
A bench-clearing brawl between Mexico and Canada today resulted in multiple ejections (including, later, some fans) and perhaps evidence that players take the exhibition games more seriously than we'd previously thought. While the fight really wasn't as bad as it looked (baseball brawls never are, of course) that players could be bothered to leave the bench alone shows they've got passion for the event.

We pounded 'em.....on the scoreboard, when they dumped the benches, and probably in the fights taking place in the stands.

Perhaps the Mexican players and fans will learn about the people they're taunting, before running their gate, next time. I'm sure a few of them were wondering how their shirts got pulled over their heads while eating knuckle sandwiches.

WAY TO GO BOYS.

Hopefully we can upset the States tomorrow and advance.
