I haven’t been following that. My attention has been directed more towards how various lens combinations worked out with the F55 cameras at the Confederations Cup because I think that will serve as a prime early indicator of the feasibility (as to its value) for adoption of 4K by broadcasters for non-cinematic content.

At this point, with the help of HEVC, I wouldn’t rule out broadcasters embracing 1080/50-60p over 4K, at least initially as a delivery format for home audiences. Will explain later when I have more time. Suffice to say that Shakira would look great in 4K on your 4K tv at home, but she isn’t moving much (except for her hand) and the depth of field is shallow in this shot…

On the other hand, HEVC should become a great enabler of 4K movies for home audiences…be it vis-à-vis broadcast, internet or physical media like 4KBD. And since I’m giving a short overview of the usage of advanced codecs, the way it’s looking is that the proprietary codec from RED will be of little value or significance to consumers watching content in their homes and will stagnant as only a niche codec for independent filmmakers (or hobbyists who aspire to be), unless things drastically change as the DCI (a joint venture of Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal and Warner Bros. Studios) essentially controls all the content that movie audiences really desire to watch.
