The advent of HDR/DolbyVision was developed so that the sales of 4K would get a kickstart. 8K for most homeowners is overkill on a grand scale. Fewer people interested = less sales = the development of this technology will remain relatively expensive. 8K will SELL to theaters, business and industries who will rely on the larger, sharper display. It will be but a niche market on the home side. Much like how $1K video cards in PC's generate 240fps or more in gaming....and who here has those?
I think the features being offered by 8K TVs not the added resolution are what Sony, Panasonic and Sharp are targeting.

I can't wait to watch my UHD discs mastered on a 2K DI on these 8K displays.

Sounds like glasses-free 3D. Which would be good, I love 3D and while I do have a UHD 3D set at the moment it won't last forever (plus if we get UHD and 3D at the same time...).

....and aside from the increased resolution, that's about it!

So, if you can afford a projector that displays 3D, why not go that route and remain in the 4K boat...especially when going to 8K is going to increase that investment geometrically.

Again, NOBODY was really buying 4K until the advent of HDR & DolbyVision. I think the holiday numbers will show that once the available data is coordinated in early February...plus the PRICES of these went down.

3D IS a niche market, it was never really allowed to take off, but if the technology being used to make glasses-free 3D on 8K was able to manifest itself onto the 4K market...I'd think you would see upper-level models include this technology. Until then, it's VR goggles for individuals and projectors for masses and right now, barring any other additional technology, this is where 3D is at least short-term. The expense and detail of manufacturing of 8K devices, as well as not appealing to home market because of required size of the displays, will likely keep 8K expensive and their market share small.

If you read this paper on the HEVC multi-view plus depthmap codec you can get an idea of what's coming with 4K VR and 8K glassless 3D. Point is that by 2020 there will be 100 million VR goggles and media for VR of course. Using the HEVC multi-view with depthmap for VR media allows very fast three axis views and can be used by 8K TVs for glassless 3D. Sony and Panasonc plan to sell 8K TVs in 2020.

Quote:
multi-view displays are available, which show not only a stereo pair, but a multitude of views (typically 20 to more than 50 views) from
slightly different directions. Each user still perceives a viewing pair for the left and right eye. However, a different stereo pair
is seen when the viewing position is varied by a small amount. This does not only improve the 3D viewing experience, but
allows the perception of 3D video without glasses.

It was inevitable, the good news is 4K UHD BD discs will look amazing upscaled to 8K with a future 8K UHD BD player. 1080p discs will still look good upscaled to 4K but not sure how they will look with 8K upscaling. Anyway 4K is still amazing to me but the industry just loves making money on different formats. 8K, 16K it's coming. Does this mean your 4K TV will not be good enough 10 years from now, no, unless they start broadcasting cable in all 8K.

How long before 8K UHD BD becomes a reality? I'd say 4 to 5 years once 8K sets come on the market. 1080p sets will become scarcer, it will just be 4K and 8K sets.

8K streaming before 8K Blu-ray discs. ...Ultra High speed internet.

Right now they have problems making three layers on Blu-ray...BD-100 ... 100GB disc. And they need better lasers, readers, transports.

So yes I agree 8K discs are not tomorrow morning. But 8K TVs are.

Too soon, no 8K content. Demos, live sports not enough. Use a 8K display for business reasons to show four football or hockey games in a bar or hotel convention room, more likely once broadcast catches up. Internet providers will be gouging all of us sooner then later.

Law of diminishing returns applies. You look at a DVD on a HDTV, is watching the same on a UDTV that much better. BD's yes see some processing, interpolation that makes watching them on 4K so much better, is 8K even with 12 bit worth the price of admission? Joce earlier humerous comment does seem to hit home, how will a 2K DI w/HDR look any appreciable better on a 8K versus a 4K? Things always look better on a larger hi-res display, but it will be a good example to study for awhile until ample real 4K or 8K content is available.

Default 8K tv for 2018

Yea,

The 8K cat is officially out of the bag, and it’s wearing over 33 million gorgeous OLED pixels. To ring in the new year, LG Display announced late New Year’s eve that it will be toting a huge 88-inch 8K OLED TV to CES 2018. The new TV will replace LG’s previously huge-est 77-inch OLED as the largest OLED display on the planet. The TV’s resolution will be 7680 x 4320, which is 16 times more pixels than 1080p and four times that of today’s 4K TVs.

Since it is an OLED TV, each of those 33,177,600 pixels will be capable of perfect black levels, enabling the display to achieve impressive HDR results. LG also points to the fact that, because OLED pixels are self-emissive (meaning they produce their own light), this large 88-inch 8K TV will be more efficient then comparably sized LCD TVs which rely on LED backlights. The company also claimes the massive OLED TV will more easily achieve high brightness levels than large LED-backlit televisions.

To be serious though, as I've said in other threads, were not going have to worry about 8K for a while, and even then there's going to be little to no 8K content. We have a hard enough time getting 4K content.
If People start buying 8K Products, than 4K Products, it will be here sooner than you think.

I'm sure 8K resolution will be mindblowing (in the case you own a giant 80/100inch screen with a lot of space), it's nice to have a thread to talk about that. But seriously, I don't like the idea to push the thing too fastly. Personally, i don't care if we have to wait 2025 for the first 8K BD's releases, so we can live the present and enjoy our current 4K releases.

Also, current 2017 4K OLED displays have too many problems with banding. This kind of issue has to be fixed before releasing giant 8K displays. Currently, OLED isn't mature enough for giant screens.

From what I can see, that 8k oled is prototype only, won't be for sale this year per LGs release lineup that dropped about 1 hour ago.

They wont have an 8k set for dale for a few years, and when they do its ganna cost $20k+ for the first few years. This 8k announcement is much the same as that sony 20inch oled that got unveiled at ces all those years ago. Took what a decade after for oled to hit market at consumer level?
