There was a time when people said that Iron Man couldn't work in the same world as one that had aliens, but it worked just fine in The Avengers. There's no reason he, and the others, can't co-exist in a universe that has magic as well.

I heard that argument the first time. I disagree with it. Simple as that. Nothing about aliens really ruins Iron Man. Magic does. And even if you think those are on the same level there's still the matter of piling things on top of other things. One suspension of disbelief does not guarantee a second.

The two twins at the end of The Winter Soldier got their powers from the stone. Having Strange end up the same makes sense.

Marvel proved they could pull off a space movie w/Guardians of the Galaxy....I'd bet my left nut that they can pull off magic in the universe they've created and it'll be excellent!!

The door for magic has already been opened in the MCU. Thor introduced it into the world.

Why? Because it makes him less special?

Because impossibly miniaturizing an impossible power source* to use with a powered armor platform which it and its surrounding technology is just as much of an engineering impossibility as depicted is still pretty special even with magic around.

*Not to mention successfully synthesizing a cosmic cube fragment to also power said armor system.

Not quite sure how people are talking about something being grounded when there's a big green thing running around angry and smashing things. Lol

That's the whole point, though. You can only pile so many suspensions of disbelief on top of one another. While I love the interconnected nature of the MCU at some point it gets silly. Where that point is will differ from one viewer to the next. I imagine for some comic book loyalists that point doesn't exist. For others they already turned the whole thing off. It depends on the person.

For me personally magic thrown on top of everything else would run the risk of being a bridge too far. That's just my personal worry, you don't have to agree with it. I roll my eyes at half the comic book fan comments on these movies, so you're welcome to roll your eyes at mine.

True. Magic is just science that we don't yet understand.

It's explained as cosmic science so advanced it seems like magic to us. They went to great, great lengths to explain that in the films, which is a big reason why I doubt they're just going to have Strange doing straight-up magic.

Well, then perhaps Strange will learn the same cosmic science so advanced that we all think its magic even though its not, so any confusion the audience may have would then be silly :P

In a way, that's where they're going. The energies being manipulated could all be related in some ways (in Thor they sidestep the issue, but while Asguardians get their powers from the Odinforce, Loki is a straigth magical user trained in the use of spells and illusions). But when you look at it, there's no two way around it here: For it to be about Dr Strange, The Sorcerer Supreme, it'll have to be considered magic, and with the use of "magical" artifacts but also ceremonies, and spell "formulas", and refer to ancient creatures and mystical entities.

After all, like Mr Feige talks about in this interview says, Dr Strange is also about a man of science going into a world of mysticism and faith.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting weird. What began as a fairly grounded science fiction universe in the first Iron Man has slowly expanded to include gods and aliens, and in the coming years it’s going to get even stranger. Literally, as a Doctor Strange movie is in the works at Marvel (and in case you aren’t sure he’s really coming, there’s a pretty big shout out to him in Captain America: The Winter Soldier).

While Marvel has sidestepped the issue of magic in the Thor movies by just making it advanced Asgardian technology, Doctor Strange is much more directly set in the world of wizardry. After all, Dr. Stephen Strange’s job title is Sorceror Supreme. I sat down with Marvel honcho Kevin Feige at the junket for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and asked him how Marvel intended to move into the realms of magic and the unknown.

Are you watching the Cosmos series? That’s magic, [the quantum physics]. It’s unbelievable. If somebody knew how to tap into that stuff, what’s the difference between that and magic?

You don’t get into it in Harry Potter, but if a scientist went to Hogwarts he’d find out how some of that stuff is happening! We’re not going to spend a lot of time on that, but there will be some of that. And particularly for a character like Strange, who goes from a man of science to a man of faith and who traverses both worlds. And sometimes there won’t be an answer! Sometimes he’ll want an answer - “How is this happening?!” - and nothing.

Doctor Strange also has to be weirder as a movie. The Marvel films have so far had something approaching a house style - even Winter Soldier, which has its own look, fits into the larger Marvel aesthetic. But Feige sees Doctor Strange being quite different.

“Doctor Strange needs to be a Ditko/Kubrick/Miyazaki/The Matrix mind-trip,” he said. With all the recent news about directors being courted for the film this is interesting - who will be able to deliver for Marvel the kind of mind-trip Feige wants while also making a movie that will hit a wide audience?

Yup.

Having Doctor Strange use spacey-sciencey-magic "powers" like we've seen already in Thor and Avengers, it would be no problem.

This movie is going to be awesome.

That Feige quite pretty much backs up what I am saying, even if you're reading it the opposite way. It might be hand-waved to a large extent but they're going to address it, and they're going to say "cosmic science that looks like magic." I can guarantee it.

P.S. There are no gods in the MCU, they've made a point to say it.

This is all opinion. I am stating mine. I don't think magic works in the same universe as Iron Man. Just because the comics do it doesn't mean it's good in a movie. They've already changed many things from the comic in the MCU, I think the source of Strange's power is another time they should do so. The idea that Marvel always stick to the comics is complete fallacy.

I don't think mutants would work either, and Marvel are lucky in my opinion that they can't use the term. It prevented them from being stupid and combining those worlds. There's nothing special about Iron Man or Captain America in a world with mutants. I don't care if the comic do it, it's poor world-creation in my opinion. They're lucky the option to do it was taken away from them.
Fair enough. I also like the X-men films(minus two, the usual suspects ) but after watching them I've never once felt like the comics had come to life.

I also never said Marvel Studios always sticks to the comics, they do in fact change some things but they still give me that feeling like the comics have jumped off the page.

The one thing that actually annoys me a bit is the talk that the Dr. Strange film probably won't be an origin story. I know a lot of people are sick of origin stories but I think it's a good route to go when it comes to a characters first ever live action movie. Hopefully they'll be a couple flashbacks.

Fair enough. I don't read comics so obviously I don't care about that.

I seem to recall a time, long ago, about Thor being the toughest sell back during Phase One. "How are they going to explain Thor as a God, Mjolnir, magic, etc...." The movie came out, surprised everyone....and even though it skirted the issues it answered them sufficiently for a casual movie going universe. They'll do the same with Strange....I'm not worried about it, myself. There's no need to go full explanation, I'd love it, but it's unnecessary.

I enjoy (most of) the X-Men movies, but "grounded"? I can't really agree with that. I mean, a genetic mutation that allows people to teleport, manipulate the weather and so on is a pretty ridiculous concept in my view, more so than some unexplained supernatural powers.

They made it pretty clear they're aliens and inspired the Earth's god myths when they visited our planet. I would actually say they went to great lengths to make that clear, as opposed to skirting the issue.

They clearly skirted around the issue of Loki's powers, as he obviously is not an Asguardian, among other things (the nature of the Odinforce being another).
