How does magic break the suspension of disbelief anymore than having mythological gods?

They made it very clear the Asgardians are aliens, not gods. Are we watching the same movies?

Loki is not an Asgardian, he's a Frost Giant.

I know. They're not gods either. All those characters and races are aliens in the movies, as made extremely clear by dialog. They made a point to make sure it was said multiple times in each film. It's also repeatedly said that advanced cosmic technology will look like magic to people not as advanced.

The fact they've made a point to make these things clear is what makes me think they might do the same with Strange's powers.

"To your people its magic, to ours its science." I believe that's what Thor said to Jane

Yes. And Portman repeats the old "advanced technology looks like magic to primitive people" line in both movies I believe. And there were other similar comments. And lots of "we're not gods" and stuff about being aliens. And the first movie opened in Norway 1,000 years ago to make it clear they were visiting then and spawned the religion.

The fact they have bent over backward on this issue to say it's sci-fi and not mysticism is what makes me skeptical they're going to have Strange be a straight-up magician.

I don't have the link at the moment, but it's being said that ETHAN HAWKE may be up for the role which is something I would be completely fine with. I would prefer Phoenix but Hawke is a fine choice.

Cool, I could live with him as well. I hope it will be confirmed by an official source.

That's why I didn't post a link. It's not a credible source so I would seriously not take this seriously at all. I didn't want to add too much fuel to something that could be nothing.

Joaquin Phoenix Won’t Be ‘Doctor Strange’

Back to the drawing board. Marvel Studios has been working to sign a deal with Joaquin Phoenix to put the actor in costume as Doctor Strange, but those talks have now ended with no deal made. We first started to hear rumblings of that casting choice over the summer, and there was a point where it seemed like Marvel might even be able to announce Phoenix as Strange at Comic Con. But that never happened, and now months later the talks have ended. With Phoenix out, who will play Doctor Strange?

Deadline reports that Phoenix is definitely out of the picture for Doctor Strange. We always wondered if the actor could really work with Marvel’s methods, and if he could fit in with the Comic Con promotional tricks that Marvel embraces. He never seemed like that guy, and so this news isn’t a surprise.

So who will play Strange? At this point we don’t know. Deadline says that rumors of Ethan Hawke wearing the costume are unfounded. Other actors such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Jared Leto have been floated as possibilities. There’s no reliable word from Marvel at this point, but with a release date for the film already set expect the studio to get moving fast to lock an actor for the role.

Scott Derrickson is directing Doctor Strange from a script most recently written by Jon Spaihts. Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer wrote a previous draft.

Doctor Strange is scheduled to be released on July 8, 2016.

I still wouldn't mind Luke Evans or Tom Hardy either, of names that have cropped up in the past. They'll need someone locked down soon though.

I am a fan of Hardy, but he is not a good choice for Strange. He is too short and bulky.

Luke Evans is their best bet. If Marvel is looking for someone to hand the reins over to when RDJ is done it's him.

I like Tom Hardy and think he's a great actor but I don't see him as Dr. Strange.

It's not about body type. See: Michael Keaton, and a million others.

Pascal would probably draw a bigger crowd, but I think Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger) would make a better Doctor Strange.
