My only casting issue with them is Don Cheadle. I liked the original Rhodes much better.

That wasn't Marvels fault though it was Howards' and I think Cheadle ended up being fine

Agreed. Their original picks, Norton and Howard, were far better than their replacements.

Too bad Norton and Howard both proved difficult to work with and sunk their chances of coming back. But I honestly liked Ruffalo more as Banner, and I like Cheadle in the role of Rhodes.

I've never felt like Norton was a great choice for Banner. He looked the part okay but doesn't strike me as particularly... lab-oriented. Maybe too street smart looking. I'm not sure what it is about Ruffalo, but he fits better.

Disagree. Cheadle played a much better Rhodes and was a far more believable Air Force Officer.

Also agree on Howard>Cheadle but thought Ruffalo was better than Norton as Banner.

I wasn't impressed with either, honestly. I thought Eric Bana did a better job there. Even thought it was the 'lesser' Hulk movie, IMHO, I think he was the better Bruce.

I think Ewan McGregor would be fine, I can see that.

I think Benedict Cumberbatch is by far the best choice: His Britishness would be a nice contrast to the other Marvel characters and he does very good "aloof". Sadly, I don't see how he'll have the time to do it - but if it meant delaying by even a year I think it'd be worth doing.

Personally, I'd be very happy to see a non-white actor in the role. Idris Elba would be great if they could figure out a way to make it work with his Thor part. Or how about Andre Holland, who's been brilliant in THE KNICK as a young doctor?

I would love to see Ewan as Doctor Strange, but if it came down to a scheduling conflict I'd rather have my trio of Obi-Wan films.

But both is good too.

I wouldn't be happy if they made him black. I want an actual black Superhero like Black Panther, not someone converted. I feel like it would be a slap in the face slightly.

This I completely agree with. His movie was the better of the two as well.

I actually think the opposite somewhat: The world was a very different place when these characters first appeared. Marvel was quite progressive in introducing ethnic characters but they were all based on now-outdated stereotypes: Shang Chi was a master of Kung Fu, the Black Panther an African prince; whilst Luke Cage and The Falcon all talked "jive".

Now I'm not saying those characters haven't got more sophisticated over the years but if Dr Strange was created now, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be black or why playing him as such wouldn't be quickly accepted as it has been with Nick Fury. He'd always been a white guy in my mind and I balked a little when I first heard it, I'll admit, but yeah - if there's no good reason why the character has to be white, why not?

There ARE good reasons why Captain America and Thor have to be white (or why it would stretch credibility if they weren't) but they're the exception rather than the rule. By far the more important thing is that they're played by good, strong, charismatic actors and by that score, someone like Elba trumps the likes of Ewan McGregor hands down, imo. And I'm Scottish!

Nick Fury wasn't ever all that popular, so they took a chance and I think that they benefited because of it.

Dr Strange is a bit more established, and changing him would be a very bad idea. Part of his appeal is that he was your very stereotypical upper class white man who thought he was better than anyone in the world, and had no time for the 'little' people--which was everyone else but him. He was the highest possible social strata in the 1960s--a neurosurgeon--which elevated him high above even the other doctors of the time. Then he lost it all in an accident, and his whole personality changed and he became someone who puts his life on the line to protect people he doesn't even know exist.

There's no question they can change the race of characters if they want (or sex, as is in Thor's case) but personally I think it would be better to take less established characters and make them into something iconic.

Besides, a Dr Strange movie would be the perfect opportunity to introduce Cloak and Dagger, and Cloak is not only black, but (along with Dagger) fairly under developed and could really spawn off into their own film.

There aren't a huge amount of black superheroes, but rather than turn a white one black they should take the opportunity to breathe new life into the existing ones to make them more special. Falcon, for instance, was fantastic in the new Captain America movie. I always liked Falcon, so seeing him brought to screen was a real treat. I hope he gets far more screen time in the next Captain America film.
