What about Joaquin Phoenix? The role was his... signed, sealed and delivered had he not gotten cold feet and backed out. You can't say that Cumberbatch was picked because he's the "big name of the moment" when he wasn't even the first choice to begin with.

Personally, I think this is the best casting choice Marvel has had since the initial announcement of Robert Downy Jr. They need someone who can pick up the ball when everyone else is gone and this man can do it.

Yeah, god forbid that Marvel gets popular known actors for their roles! What were they thinking?! They should just get Joe Somebody off of the street and give him the role, talent be damned! That's clearly what's right by the people on the internet.

Stuff like this makes me realize how happy I am the people on the internet have no say on casting and things like that in Hollywood. The fact that people can get up in arms about a great, and highly talented, actor getting an acting gig is just beyond ridiculous. It's basically the same as going to a high class restaurant and complaining that this meal is good, but it's popular and they need to change the menu. It's just absurd...

Just to toss in my two cents: I'm not surprised by this announcement. I think it is a smart move on Marvel's part to cast an actor versed in fanboy friendly roles. I think he's quite capable of delivering. That said, I don't have to love the casting just because Marvel hasn't disappointed. I'm not as much a fan of his as others are, I find him slightly bland, but this could be the one that changes that. He certainly wasn't my first choice. But I'll be there opening weekend and eagerly anticipating all the news tidbits till then.

Like I said earlier, this is the only casting decision I do not agree wit, could he knock it out of the park? Maybe, but going by the Kahn performance, I highly doubt it.

I will say that my initial reaction is a bit on the strong side, but this possibility came out of nowhere.

No one is saying you have to love the choice. But the constant complaining of, "He's just a hot commodity!", "Oh, he's just the safe choice, Marvel dropped the ball!", etc., are just absurd. We should want talented actors in the role, and Marvel's casting record is proof they know who to land. So I just find the arguments a bit ridiculous. At least you said you're willing to give him a chance, and that's what it should be. Exactly that.

Probably gonna be awhile before we get a non-white actor in the lead role of an MCU franchise. Ben is as lily white as you can get!

Pedro Pascal wasn't even considered for the role far as I know, so I don't feel betrayed or anything. It's just that I really liked him in Game of Thrones and thought he'd have fit this part well.

Now, I shall do as promised and never complain about Benny in any capacity. I will also say, Hooray! if they choose to also make Marvel's Benedict Cumberbatch. Every character is him, all played by him, he takes on Thanos alone. I got what I wanted. Marvel more than made up for their first less than dream casting on my end.
