Titled Triplets, the story would see Schwarzenegger and DeVito as brothers Julius and Vincent, conceived experimentally, who discover they have third sibling.
The project doesn’t have a director at this early stage -- Ivan Reitman, who helmed the original, would only act as a producer with his Montecito Picture Co. cohorts Joe Medjuk, Tom Pollock and Ali Bell, according to sources -- but the hunt is on for writers to develop the idea. Insiders caution that no substantial creative discussions have taken place between Universal and Montecito.
The actors are attached to star.
This wouldn’t be the first sequel to an 1988 film that Universal is working. The studio is developing a sequel to Midnight Run that sees Robert De Niro, one of the film’s two original stars along with Charles Grodin, returning in an incarnation to be directed by Brett Ratner.

this sounds like the worst idea ever conceived in the history of Western civilization. Even worse than lips on Optimus and "Ninja Turtles".

It looks as if that Twins sequel is moving forward. Deadline reports that The Book of Mormon star Josh Gad and Ryan Dixon have been tapped to pen the treatment for Triplets, with Dixon handling the script. The follow-up has Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito reprising their roles from the 1988 comedy as mismatched siblings. As previously reported, the follow-up will find them getting in touch with a third brother played by Eddie Murphy. We talked with Schwarzenegger on the set of The Last Stand earlier this year, and he was enthusiastic about Eddie Murphy joining in on the fun, even throwing up some marketing suggestions while he was at it:

“I’d find somebody like Eddie Murphy or someone [laughs] that people would say, ‘How does that happen, medically speaking?’ and, ‘Physically, there’s no way.’ Then somehow we would explain it. That would be hilarious with what we know about someone like him. You’ve got to find people that, in real life, people laugh about them and whatever we know about them that makes you laugh. I can see a poster, a billboard, with us three… ‘They found another one. Triplets. Only their mother can tell them apart.’ I would do that in two seconds, because that’s real entertainment. You come out with that movie for Christmas, like December 5th or something like that, and you’re home free, just like with the other one.”

Twins director Ivan Reitman is poised to return to helm Triplets, but we likely won’t hear more on the project until Gad and Dixon finish the treatment.

Just when you think a project has completely died, it comes back to life. The long-mooted sequel to Twins, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, is an active movie again, with Arnie confirming that the screenplay for the new film is finally complete.
