@gwsat

That's precisely what I bought it for. Love this movie too much to not have the superior audio track. It was one of the major draws to the movie for me.

I agree with you. I bought the UHD HDR/Atmos disk from Amazon and played it on my Oppo UDP-203 and Sony 75XBR X940D tonight. I was delighted, both by how it looked and by how it sounded. I love Atmos audio and had positive recollections of the film from when I first saw it, so buying this Atmos enabled version was an easy call. The film was even better than I had remembered and its Atmos soundtrack, while a little uneven, has moments that are reference quality. These occasions mostly involved Jack flying his helicopter. Anyway, I was highly entertained, 8 Stars out of 10.

I think this movie has an issue with how it was upscaled, mastered or how the HDR was done brightness and contrast wise.
After doing several tests with tweaking both brightness and contrast on my T.V. set Oblivion looks better and surprisingly sharper than the BD release.

Pseudoscience.

Comparing the PQ difference between BD & UHD of Lone Survivor vs the difference between the BD & UHD of Oblivion is astonishing.

I genuinely think there was a remaster mistake with Oblivion.

I rented this first and thought it was pretty lame. I suggest others do too. Blind buying is just too much of a crap shoot. This film had potential but is just bleh. IMO.

Oblivion has been softened to shit for the UHD. It still actually looks respectable-ish in and of itself, but the BD blows it away for sheer spatial resolution. By using the sharpening controls on my Panasonic player I can get it looking superficially sharper without any blatant artefacts so that'll do for now and the extra colour & range really is lovely so I'm keeping the UHD in any case.

I didn't see any softness to speak of on the UHD HDR disk. I also watched a bit of the 1080P BD but thought it looked about like the 4K version. That could have been my aging eyes, of course, but there it was.

Watching the UHD HDR disk last night marked the third time I had seen the film. I have liked it better every time. I have concluded that the storytelling was a little too subtle and non linear for its own good, so I had to marinate in it for a while to finally figure out everything that was going on. Anyway, Oblivion is a well made film that gives us a lot to think about. Let me repeat, I thought the UHD HDR version's Atmos audio was a huge upgrade.

Funny how we see things differently, I don't just mean the disc but the film itself: I didn't like it initially because I thought it was far too obvious and on-the-nose with what's actually going on. Heh.

the 4k disc is not soft. its soft COMPARED to the blu ray which is razor sharp

Exactly right, which is why I said it looks okay in terms of spatial detail when taken for what it is, but compared to the Blu there's no contest.

My take on this one is that the HDR color palette is much warmer than on the 1080. The sharpness is much more visually striking on the 1080. If I'd never seen the 1080, I wouldn't have any qualms about the UHD disc, but having seen them back-to-back, the UHD leaves me feeling underwhelmed, though the audio is fantastic. Then I pop the 1080 back in and the PQ is mesmerizing.

I kind of like the cooler look anyway. Those super cool whites were a big reason I loved the look of the movie. Not saying which is more accurate, but cooler tone movies are rare lately and it made an impact on me. Throw in the extra detail and I think I'm good with the BD.

You never know though, one day it'll be $10 or something and like Geoff I'll be like "screw it, might as well give 'er a go."

With this at $14.99 I'm tempted to pick it up since I don't even own the blu-ray disc which I know can be picked up cheap for around $8

Just picked one up from my local Best Buy with a 10% off birthday coupon and they only had the new regular (non-glossy) slipcovers. Oh well, at least we are getting a slipcover (looking at you, Fox ). Looking forward to watching it as I haven't seen it since it was in theaters. Never owned the 1080P Blu-ray, so my opinion on the UHD will be unbiased.

Weren't you literally just mocking people for caring about cover art in another thread? And here you are going on about glossy slips. Hmmmm.

Anyway there's no bias or unbiased factors here. The UHD looks less detailed.

Yes, yes I did. :P Give me a slipcover over pretty cover art any day. Nothing's uglier on a shelf than a naked blue amaray case.
