Think it was reported by a few that the DV version doesn't suffer like the UHD and looks a lot better detail wise which is very bad done by Universal.

Hmmm, I guess I'll redeem the digital copy then for if I ever have a DV set. What does a Vudu stream do if you have an HDR 10 only set? Play 4k without HDR, convert to SDR or show you the HDX?

Edit: I did notice that the Roku will do HDR10 on Digital Copy titles, but so far only Kong:SI and FOTF, I assume because they have both, even in the DC's. Still new to this 4K stuff, only been a little over a week for me ![]() Last edited by Pgcmoore; 07-30-2017 at 12:27 AM. |

Well that was interesting, your question got me a little curious to try something. So I just installed Fandango on the Roku and linked my UV titles to it, and low and behold, Oblivion now plays in HDR from the Roku!! woo hoo!, but in HDR10, learning something new everyday now. Still cant get Passengers DC to play in UHD yet thou, even thou its in my UV library as UHD. Had a ticket in at Flixster on it and they have escalated it to Sony I guess, best way I have found to play DC's thou is thru Vudu from my phone, I think as they get more titles available in HDR and more are in both HDR10 and DV life will get a whole lot easier, not having to have a 4K blu-ray player for every Display in the house will be a good thing!

a great spot to check PQ between the BD 1080, UHD, HDR10 and Dolby Vision is between 00:31 and 00:39 minutes in the film. just watched all 4 formats with the same display settings. The difference is astonishing and Dolby Vision is clear winner of coarse followed by HDR10 but PQ is almost the same if not better on the BD in 1080 (Disk) than UHD without HDR (DC),
in my opinion, |

Yeah there were some comparison shots with Netflix shows, 4k stream compared to 1080 blu, and while there was some added detail on the stream the compression kind of killed most of it and they looked roughly on par. I'd guess the same would be true for movies without HDR entering the conversation.
Vizio P specs mean it benefits more from Dolby than mine would, so hard to comment on that. |

Just watched this... love the movie so when it was $15 thought I'd see it for myself. Reminds me of 3:10 to Yuma and X-Men: First Class. It's warmer and softer than the BD, plus grain is less obvious, very similar to those two discs. I watched the whole UHD though and didn't think it looked bad really (which I did for those other two). It just looked warmer and softer than I remembered. Also I noticed some obvious Miss Peregrine style banding in the sky in a few shots.
I put the BD in afterward and it felt like a huge upgrade, even though it theoretically would be a downgrade. Much more detail and a crisp, cool look. One of the things I loved about Oblivion was that bright white "refrigerator light" look to it, which the UHD removes in favor of the standard warmer look. God knows which is more accurate to the theatrical exhibition, but I like the unique look of the BD. The fact is has a lot more detail (very obvious when upscaled, not even a contest) is a bonus. tl:dr Gonna call this the third UHD I think is worse than the BD. It's not ugly though, and I'll probably keep the disc. It's a unique and different experience. |

I watched this movie last night and I thought it looked pretty good. There weren't any wow moments, and not much color, but I think that's the intended look. I didn't compare it to the Blu-ray, but I think it's a small upgrade over the Blu-ray. I'm happy with it.

Still haven't seen any UHD vs digital copy with dolby vision vs Blu-ray yet on this title. Only read that a few seems to prefer the digital streaming version above the scrubbed UHD that has a very soft picture but that the new Atmos audio is better on the UHD. I'm most interested in the video quality.

This is one of the very rare times that I'll sharpen the shit out of something. Once I've cranked up the Reality Creation on the TV (or if using the Panny player then both mid and high freq luma sharpening to +6 and Edge Correction to +1) then it really does have something of the arresting sense of sharpness that the BD has, and because it's been softened so heavily you can likewise sharpen it very heavily before the usual artefacts like ringing etc start to appear.
