I think the director could have gone for the warmer colors from the start if that is the look he wanted.

I bought the movie on release, that's almost 5 years of watching the very cool color tone of the Blu-ray release. To me, it just gives it a unique look as I mentioned. I'm not sure why did they change that on the UHD, but it's another factor that doesn't motivate me to watch the UHD over the BD.
The UHD came after the bluray, so all the kinks were worked out and that is how we reached the warmer and more accurate color temperature

That's kind of like saying "Terminator 1 sounds better now because all the gun shots were properly redone for the later releases." I would disagree with that, because most of the gun shots from that 1911 sound like they have a silencer on.

Same with "Oblivion," only because the UHD came out years later, does not mean it is the correct version or that errors were fixed. On playback, the UHD has very visible softness too it, plus the color temperatures were altered for no reason.

Even near the end of the film when
[Show spoiler] Harper is flying to the Tet and he is hearing the flight recorder. On the Blu-ray, when it cuts to the scenes of the flight recorder playing back, the color temperature changes to a more so normal level. When it cuts back to the current time and he talks to the Tet, it goes back to the cooler look. On the UHD, that entire scene plays out at the same color temperature,
it also lost that extra touch the BD has.

I honestly don't see the UHD as the correct color. If the director mentions it somewhere, then I'll accept it. It may look more pleasing to some people and I can understand that, but if that was his intent, the BD would have had those warmer color temps at release. I see a few issues on this UHD release to doubt that this release was the proper way this film should have looked.

The warmer color temperature is more accurate because it is closer to D65, which is the standard color temperature for movies and the color temperature adopted by all professional calibrators

That doesn’t make sense with regards to this transfer. You’re talking about calibration for displays which is D65. Doesn’t mean all transfers are to look neutral. Filmmakers decide what side of the spectrum they want their films to look like, whether cold or warm. A movie can still look cold even if your display is caliabrted properly. The purpose of calibration is not to have every movie look the same but to match the intent of the filmmakers. D65 isn’t warm either. That’s a misconception. D65 is the color white. Warm would have a red push which means it’s lower than D65.

Why would the bluray have a blue push then? Obviously that was not as it was originally intended. Usually intentional cold temperature is used to portray a very cold location or a scene that takes place at night.

Someone who saw the film during its theatrical exhibition will know. Why wouldn’t it be the intent? Cold cold temperature that takes place at night?

D65 is rec709 and 2020. D63 is the standard wp for movies DCI P3 . Which of course, neither has any bearing on the the artistic choices in the movie. And it’s easy enough to convert between them in any case.

Here is the chart for Kelvin, D65 is color white so that is correct when it has a warmer look it will have a red push.

Neither did I.
GeoffD even picked the UHD over the bluray, and he obviously has a keen eye for these things.

Well it just comes down to what’s more pleasing to the viewer. Sometimes preference reigns supreme over reference. I much prefer the UHD to the colder BD.

I much prefer the "inside a refrigerator" look of the BD. Works really well for the movie's aesthetic. I disagree with people who want everything warm. So for me the UHD has two strikes against it, not one. Shame.

I saw this movie in an IMAX at a preview screening and I don’t personally recall the movie looking overly cool, but a bit more natural. That’s not to say the UHD is correct, though. My memory really means zilch as it was years ago now. Who knows which is more accurate to the source. I do feel the Blu looks a tad on the bright side, though.

I agree, I like the warmer color in the UHD as well. The BR looks almost drained of color after watching the UHD disc but I did turn the sharpness up a few notches in the oppo menu which did not cause any ringing.
