King Kong UHD - It can look downright jaw dropping to awful thanks to contrast boosting and some edge enhancement. The Blu-ray has a more organic filmic look.

I think the EE and smoothing is there on both because it's baked into the DI. The 4k just makes it more obvious because of the higher quality. Also both have hot contrast, the 4k just makes that hot contrast hot hot hot because of HDR.

That's my perspective though, everyone's different.

I remember finding the first 30 minutes or so in New York looking horrible with its overly boosted contrast. Not sure if that's supposed to look that way...

T2 - Please don't start asking as it went straight to classifieds at halfway mark.

Coming to audio, I thought the LFE was lacking on the Atmos mix and this has been confirmed my many at AVSForum. So Oblivion is sadly a botched release on 4K UHD IMO.
And at the same time I saw a post where they levelmatched the blu and 4K audiotracks and saw on the curves it's the same just boosted highes on explosions and such on the DTS-HD MA as usual per DTS so I still bet the Atmos is a upgrade since it has real/correct overhead effects.

It looks just as high contrast on the BD, but since it's limited to 100 nits it doesn't gouge your eyes out like the UHD does.

Same here. It looked horrible. I had contrast boosting resulting in blown highlights and EE in some scenes.

I’ve read all 72 pages of this argument on oblivion. Here are my observations. I have a lg65b7, lg ubk 90 uhd player and an apple 4K tv. The uhd has a dark picture and details especially in background are lost. I have the regular bd version and have redeemed the Apple TV version of oblivion. The iTunes dv version VIDEO wise is by far the best version. I have paused at exact frames several times and compared. It has a sharper brighter picture than the uhd and is warmer than the bd.

The audio is Atmos and isn’t as good as the disc based versions but still is very good. You can knock streaming all you want but the dv version is the best version. It really isn’t close.

No Rocky. iTunes DV> all others. (Or Vudu) Why do you continually tout the uhd version when many who have all 3 have stated that the iTunes DV version is the best? I have compared all 3 and own them all. Have you? If you haven’t I think you should. It will impress you.

You're fighting a losing battle, friend. Rocky's mind cannot be changed with logic or reason.

TBH it feels like Rocky vs another Rocky. I say we let the battle commence.

Yea I probably am. He’s stuck on uhd vs blu ray when I doubt he has even seen the DV version. As far as battle. If he can’t even address the DV version then his whole stance is moot.

Well this is interesting. I had no interest in updating to the 4K version, BUT, i'm a Vudu fan, and if we're saying that the VUDU 4K version beats the 2K Bluray version, well then....that might have to be considered. I'm assuming that's for the DV and not necessarily the 4K upgrade.

If the UHD looks "darker" than the stream that's probably just your set benefiting from Dolby Vision. The UHD disc doesn't look dark at all on my setup, the problem with the disc is a weird blur filter that obscures fine detail.

I did redeem this one on iTunes/Vudu to compare one day, but haven't done it yet. Reports differ on whether the stream improves that filtering or not.

iTunes 4K is the same filtered look. Dunno about VUDU but I assume it's the same.

Hmm. I compared screenshots such as in this post. For example near the beginning of the movie when TC is in the bubble craft. On my uhd copy fine details such as the weave in the seatbelt was blurred on the uhd. On the iTunes DV version they were as clear as the blu Ray so I don’t agree. Long shots were very clear as well.

I can't be bothered with the stream since the audio quality will stink up the joint but I like the look of the UHD. It's not as sharp as the bluray but sharpness isn't everything to me and I think the UHD has a more inviting look than the BD, which is a bit sterile.

From my experience on apple 4K there are some good soundtracks and some real low bitrate ones. This is one of the better ones. IMO the Dolby vision more than makes up for the sound difference which slight. It has some good impact and is not thin like some low bitrate streams I’ve heard.
