There's also stuff you can only get on disc, it goes both ways. That's one thing that turns me off streaming, you can't go "all in."

All it takes for a stream is a file upload, so there's gonna be digital exclusives either not worth putting on disc or waiting on the right time. I assume Edge of Tomorrow is waiting on the rumored sequel to happen or not, and Star Trek 2 might be waiting on a set or another movie/show. Studios love to cross-promote.

Still I agree... the more streaming exclusives, the more tempted I am to dive into that sphere. Last time I tested though I actually preferred the standard Blu over the 4k stream because of audio quality and video compression, so I haven't done it yet. I'll be testing more though, because I would like to enjoy more exclusives. I had a much better experience with Amazon's "You Were Never Really Here" so I agree that it seems to depend on the film. That one looked pretty stunning and sounded fine.

Right! Before the studios had no choice but to release on disc. Now with both options they have put many out on digital and waiting on the cross promotion to put out on disc. Edge sounds like it’s being made but might be 2021 before it is out. That’s a long time to wait on the uhd! I understand that enthusiasts want every bit of sound or audio quality they can get. I’ve always been one of them. New movies released on iTunes with Atmos even though lossy Atmos have been very crisp and full sounding with great bass. Hunter Killer was one I just bought through iTunes on Apple TV 4K and sounds great. Could the disc sound better? Sure. But the digital stream didn’t leave me wanting at all.

For me one of the biggest thing with picture & audio is having physical copy in my hands and my movie collection on my shelf

Did a quick A-B and I standby my opinion that the Blu-ray is better than the UHD as it offers an organic picture quality. The UHD is certainly brighter and HDR adds to the punch but sadly the filtering is evident mainly on mid and long range shots. Such a shame as the filtering has ruined the UHD picture as it had the potential to outshine the BD on all aspects without it

Totally agree. It’s a shame.

Well Hunter Killer is on disc so sounds like you're switching in general. Which is fine. Not something I'm prepared to do yet though. I am tempted by the exclusives however... $150 streaming box and going hog wild tempted? Not quite yet. We'll see how things shape out this year, with streaming exclusives versus disc releases.

Actually Hunter killer is out the 29th. I bought it on iTunes 2 weeks ago because I didn’t want to spend that much for the disc version. No I’m not going all in. In fact the last three movies I bought in the last 2 weeks were uhd discs. Many of my 4K purchases recently were 7.99 to 9.99 on iTunes. Such as Live free or die hard. A bargain at 7.99.

If you don't mind these digital codes, I am seeing many eBay sellers selling new 4K releases for under $10 without the code but with everything else in-tact. Wish we had such sellers in the UK.

Yeah you'd probably come out ahead buying a disc, redeeming the code, and selling the rest on Ebay. It wouldn't be some huge money maker though, so probably not worth the trouble. Might as well buy on iTunes (or try and buy a code here).

Bought it in Canadian BestBuy in store for C$20. First watched it on airplane (on tiny screen), then on old plasma TV.

I only watched the BD on 65" and it was fantastic. All the details I couldn't see before was absolutely clear (and some details little too clear).

Olga Kurylenko is certainly growing on me (in respectable way). Olga in Terrence Malick's 'To the Wonder' (shot about a year before Oblivion), which I watched last week, looks wonderful.

I do wonder though . . . what do all the scavs eat when there's nothing growing and no animals in the shelter . . . and where's the outhouse?

HDR and wide color is much more organic than the artificially sharpened Blu. There’s no filtering in the UHD.

I compared the 4k uhd disc (with all its problems) picture quality of The Fog with the iTunes version and the disc was a million times better. iTunes Fog looked soft and had what looked like dnr. Even though the on/off cross scene didn’t happen on the stream, it was Still very disappointing. But other films look great on iTunes though still not quite as good as the disc but like you say doesn’t leaving you wanting at all. I haven’t compared the BD disc of Oblivion with the iTunes uhd stream yet. I’m now going to do that to see if/what the differences are if any. I’m sure there will be.

Dense.

There is a ton of missing detail on the UHD.
Data is missing.
Gone.
It’s there on the BD.

The horse has been beat.

Exactly what I wanted to convey. There is loss of detail on the UHD even in motion.

The only moments I notice a definite drop-off in detail are the scenes at his lake cabin. The foilage is definitely blurry.
