It's a different story for movies that have been sold to a bunch of smaller distributors round the world. There's a studio with the assets in the US, but they won't lift a finger to actually encode and author the BD. They will sell the master to each distributor, and it's up to each distributor to decide what to do with it. Some might go with low bitrate VC-1, others with high bitrate AVC; some will add sharpening, others might apply DNR on purpose for easier low bitrate encoding to fit on a BD25 instead of the more expensive BD50. That's why you might find 4-5 separate European BD releases for the same movie, and every one looks a bit different.
Cheers' just getting my hopes up that the uk was DNR and EE free. From that review i thought she was watching a film were she could see grain which lead me to believe that she might be watching a better version ,but the chances are she has'nt got a clue how to review a film.

Oh, I wish with all my heart that UK (and therefore Finland, too) got a better version... but the review being from What Hi-Fi? smart money is going with "she doesn't have a clue."

You might want to reconsider your comment after studying this.

(Please ignore most of the text though, it's rather too far over the top, especially the rating. )

Ok yesterday when I flipped through some scenes and posted my remarks I said the picture was great. Now I want to retract that statement since I just watched the whole thing (extended version) and I find the picture was fantastic ! The scenes were clear as day and never noticed all the stuff people are complaining about. Even the battle scene at the beginning was great and that was people's biggest complaint. You could see all the detail of the snow falling and everything was crisp. I know I'll get flamed from all the haters but I don't care. The PQ was beautiful and am glad I didn't listen to the masses on this board. Even if they had a replacement program I wouldn't send it in. Now it's just to figure out why some people on here have copies that say are horrid and had to shut it off and some like me that see no issues at all. It can't be that opposite.

Thanks for this link. Most compelling argument I've seen against this crappy transfer so far.

The scenes that are the same in the theatrical and the extended version have the exact same PQ. There's no theatrical and extended version on the disc: there's only the theatrical version plus the additional scenes from the extended version which are seamlessly edited in when you view the extended version.

In other words, the bits that looked 'great' earlier during the theatrical version should have looked 'great' today when you viewed the extended version. They were the exact same scenes.

edit: Hmm, I might've misunderstood your post. I'll blame the fact it's almost 4am here and it's time for me to hit the hay.

You're right, she does mention grain. Unfortunately I believe poor Clare wouldn't know "authentic film grain" if it kicked her in the face.

I decided to hold off on purchasing this to see what happens. Oh well, I could've used the savings anyway. I'm already getting too much this month anyway. And while Gladiator would be cool to own and I would enjoy it very much, it's not that "Oh my gosh I've gotta have it I'm going to murder this kitten!" title for me.

Also she states in another qoute from the site in a leser review at the start that this is how Ridley Scott would want Gladiator on blu ray.If you read posts from others they think that they are getting a film like blu ray based on her review.I think she is going to hit with a few posts of anger on monday when its released over hear.

It says she is Editor-in-Chief of What Hi-fi? Sound and Vision

I wonder what this says about What Hi-fi?

We'll see. There's still the off chance UK version actually looks different. A 0.00001% chance
