I'm sure this matters not one iota, but they aren't getting my money for Gladiator until I know a quality release is issued.
But that's the sad state of affairs with everything - TV, shoes, toys, you-name-it. For whatever reason, people continue to shell out money no matter how something is poorly manufactured.Boggles my mind. If people took a nanosecond to think before buying, then we'd have more power as a consumer. Or at least I like to think. |

Having said that, that depends on consumers as a whole acting in the same way and that's very difficult being that some will purchase without research, on blind faith or because they can't tell the difference and this will mean a boycott is not as effective. Naturally I think that as Blu-ray becomes more popular, the general public is better educated in the format, their expectations change as a result, and Blu-ray ownership increases I believe studios will become more accountable. It happened with DVD when 2nd discs were added, catalogue titles were remastered, superbit DVDs were released and bare bones releases on a number of titles simply didn't cut it. Sure that makes a double dip inevitable, but I think we're getting fairly close to the point where Blu-ray's market saturation will make it far more than a niche market (which I think it hasn't been for about 12 months) and really step up as the preferred format (probably within the next 12-24 months). That's when I think a rash of titles will start getting the double dip with brand new transfers plus we'll see more of the hotly anticipated catalogue titles like Indiana Jones, Star Wars etc. At the moment, only more popular catalogue titles that have been seriously compromised in the quality department have seemed to get a re-release. They seem to be the only ones the studio consider financially viable to re-release. I'm sure that will change in the future. |

Studios deserve to be held accountable, and the only way to vote is with your wallet. Why accept inferiority? It is precisely because consumers were rightly outraged that we got remasters of Fifth Element and Gangs of New York. |

After buying this on release day, I just today sat down to watch it. I have to admit, I had very low expectations. I am ashamed to admit that I made a bunch of conclusions based on other peoples' reviews without ever seeing it myself, and some of my posts in this thread are baseless.
I think it looks good. DEFINITELY don't think it looks bad. I personally don't need a replacement program, if in fact they offer one. I cannot see how a re-release could be markedly better. |

I'm waiting for a release without the edge enhancement and DVNR.
Your opinion about this release might depend on how sensitive you are to these issues. No, it's not as bad as people have made it out to be. Still certainly room for improvement, though. |

Edge enhancement just doesn't bother me and, frankly, I seem to recall it looking the same way on DVD. I just can't believe THIS is what people were so upset about. If LOTR looks this "bad," I'm glad I'm buying Tuesday. |

The way you can see how a replacement could be better is to compare the difference between the extended scenes and the theatrical scenes. The extended scenes are clearly better PQ.

BTW: the commentary with Crowe and Scott is pretty good! |

Hm, interesting. I actually hadn't seen it in a long time and the way I could pick out the extended scenes was by the difference in PQ, not from remembering where they were in the film.

Well, I've posted a lot in here about how MAD I was about the release and I DEMANDED the replacement program, although sheepishly I'd never actually opened my copy since September.
I thought it warranted reviving the thread to share my thoughts now that, you know, I've actually seen it lol. |
