Here are my final thoughts on the re-mastered release and exchange program. I actually exchanged my dark grey re-mastered copy today, mine had BVDL-103860B1 on the inner ring. Why you ask? To hopefully clear up some of the confusion about the multiple re-mastered versions and to confirm 100% that they are the same. I also had my Best Buy receipt so the exchange was not a hassle. The one I exchanged it for also had the ‘2-Disc Set’ missing from above the Paramount logo, located in the lower right hand corner, on the back of the disk and also no security tape. This time I received the silver/light grey one with the NA13081B1R2 on the inner ring. I can tell all of you that the transfer was exactly the same between both discs (dark grey and light grey with NA13081B1R2 number), both were re-mastered. Please note my versions were obtained at Best Buy, so I cannot verify this will hold true for all stores. The re-mastered copies will have both the ‘2-Disc Set’ missing from above the Paramount logo on the back and will not have the security tape on the top of the case. The dark grey re-mastered discs do not have a consistent numbering scheme on the disc as mentioned by a few forum members here. You may see BVDL-103820B1, BVDL103860A1, etc. There is not a $10 off coupon inside the case with this version of the re-mastered copy and the slip cover will not have the $10 off sticker on it. Unless of course someone swapped the slip cover with another one. The shrink-wrap is the standard folded type with creases in it on the top and the bottom of the case. The light grey /silver re-mastered version also have the ‘2-Disc Set’ and security tape missing. However, the shrink-wrap is the vacuum sealed type, not the creased version like the dark grey re-mastered version. The disc will have NA13081B1R2 on the inner ring and it is quite easy to find. It will have the $10 off coupon and should have the $10 off coupon on the slip case. See my caveat to this in the previous paragraph. It should also be noted that both versions had preview trailers before the main menu but they were BD-Live based, they are not on the disc. I noticed they did vary each time I started the discs up and the sequencing would change as well. This may explain why some have not seen the trailers and others have. The exchange program is a mess! The phone support folks there only consider the light grey discs with the NA13081B1R2 number to be re-mastered. I can tell you with 100% certainty this is not correct! The dark grey discs are also re-mastered, regardless of the number on the inner ring. I spoke with no less than five agents over a seven day period and always got this same basic information. The re-release could not have been handled more poorly by Paramount! They definitely tried to covertly sneak the re-mastered discs into circulation without removing the old ones. This would explain why when you go to Amazon, Best Buy, and this forum you are seeing good and bad reviews for the release. I am convinced that the folks that gave this a good review probably have the re-mastered version, unbeknownst to them. Frankly, we did not know it existed until Paramount made the announcement. To make matters worse, they still have not pulled the old versions because they do not consider them to be faulty. This is a travesty, not only was there excessive DNR and EE, but the color timing was way off to boot. I hope this helps folks out that may be looking for the new version. If I had this information up front, I would not have been so frustrated in the beginning. Please see my earlier posts if you want to see just how frustrated I was. 1. What is the real address for sending in the disc to get a replacement?
2. How can I tell I have the remastered version? 3. What do I look for at the store to determine if the movie is the new remastered version? 4. How much does the new remastered version cost? 5. Are the $10 rebates still valid on the new remastered version? 6. How do I know if Amazon or other online retailers have the remastered version? 7. When will I get my new disc if I send it in to Paramount for the exchange? 8. What is the number I call to confirm I have the original release of the movie ? |

....or if they do, they can't tell the difference.
To make a long story short....Amazon is refunding my money and I'm returning Gladiator. After a lengthy email discussion with the Amazon CSRs, they agreed that there's no way for them to tell which version they sell is the remastered one. They agreed to refund my money in full and provided me a pre-paid UPS return label. I think Amazon is handling this fiasco the best way they could. It's not their fault that Paramount is underhandedly shipping the remastered version without providing Amazon (or any other retailer) a mechanical way to distinguish the two. They could've said that since Paramount doesn't consider the old copy "defective" then I couldn't just return the open copy for credit. But they didn't. Kudos to them for keeping me a satisfied customer ![]() Since the Dutch and German 10th Anniversary Editions are available now, it shouldn't be long before the US/UK versions hit the retail outlets. I'm waiting until then to pick up the new Gladiator. |

After reading wormrapers post somewhere in this thread, I took my unwatched (but opened) copy to Walmart and they let me swap it for a new one. They took the wrapping off the new one, so that I got a new, but unsealed copy. I have not checked the disc yet, but it is missing the "2 Disc" lettering on the back of the slip and case and it does have the $10 off sticker on the slip. Hopefully I got the remastered copy.

If it has lots of dust, scratches, etc...all through it, you got the remastered version. |

Not a joke at all. I posted yesterday about all this on the remastered copy I got yesterday at Wal-Mart. What looks like dust flecks, small scratches, etc. Maybe I have a shit copy but dont be stupid and tell me i'm not seeing what i'm seeing. Why a movie that's not very old would look like this is beyond me. I have almost 300 blus so I know what I'm looking at.
