I'm going to make a quick comment before I sit down and watch the rest of this movie. I don't know what you guys been smokin, but I just watched the first 6 mins of this movie, and I think the PQ is VERY GOOD.

I'm watching it on a 51" Sony Projection TV (KP-51HW40)that only produces 1080i. I'm very happy of the outcome of the movie, and if there's going to be a better version of the movie in the future... then BRING IT! I'll finish the movie and I'll let you all know how it goes.

From reading here, you guys made me feel like I should return my movie at Best Buy. Well, I'm keeping it, and if there's a better version of Gladiator.. then I'll probably double dip.

Yeah, the fact that Blu-ray's entire marketing strategy is built on "perfect picture and perfect sound."

They didn't? Wasn't this transfer (for the theatrical footage) allegedly the same as the one used in 2000 for the DVD?

....maybe because the new "standards" about HD magnify too all the issues present on each bad BD processed, this is the main "new" reason/rule to be very carefull on the production side, etc..., this is why the big loud about the mistakes did it into BD mastering process its too wide as HD.....

same master, but post production "Clean Up" was done just for the Blu-ray..... that's the way it's been explained to me..... I don't have any of the DVDs however, and haven't seen it on DVD since it was still hanging out on the New-Release wall at the video store.

I have the original DVD but I haven't watched it on my HDTV since buying the TV in May 2008. Last night was the first time I'd watched that film in probably 3 years.

it was brought up in the last page of the thread and i agree with it: for most of us, money isn't the issue. we're not misers, we're blu-ray fanatics. some of us are both, but that's not why we're here (money), its blu-ray quality, and with the exclusive arrangement of studios, we only have one source for the product we value. we can't walk down the street and buy a competitors transfer of gladiator if we don't like the first one we buy.

Someone has reviewed the uk version. What hi fi as said that the version they watched was what Ridley Scott indented for it to look like.Very film like with plenty of grain. Not sure how to take this review because she thinks that the US must want all their films to look like Disney. She thinks that the US must not like Grain like films.

I get the feeling that she thinks people stateside want a processed look.So just may be she is reviewing a diffrent transfer than the US and thinks thats the uk is the the same transfer and in fact she is reviewing a version with no Dnr ,no EE or filtering and by the sound of it plenty of grain.

She says in between that grain is some great hd detail and film like qualities.God i hope its true because i have a Region A and a region B Player just on the off chance that the uk version is a far superior disc.

Although your post confused the crap out of me.....

Do you have a link to this review?

Is she saying people in the U.S. are somehow different from people in the UK in the sense that "We" don't like grain, and "They" do? That's absurd....

Also, is she saying the reason the film got bad reviews in the U.S. is due to grain??? She is insane.....

The U.K. got the same transfer..... I've seen it confirmed by those in the U.K.

EDIT:

I read it again...... I think you're saying that she stated the film was very Grainy? SHE IS ON CRACK..... it's the same transfer, and Grain isn't the issue..... it's the lack of grain that is the issue.....

This "What Hi-FI" place must read internet forums, and then write reviews based on what that they think people want to read

I think this is their review..

http://community.whathifi.com/forums/post/299852.aspx

Quote:
When Gladiator was released on DVD – complete with amazing DTS soundtrack – it became a test disc essential here at What Hi-fi? Sound and Vision towers. Hans Zimmer’s stirring score still gets regular review use in our hi-fi rooms, but it’s been a while since Crowe and co. have had a cinematic spin. This BD’s arrival has changed that...

Ignore early US previews berating a poor visual transfer (did they expect Disney animation?) – you get Gladiator as Ridley Scott intended: filmic and epic. For every touch of (authentic) grain you get a dollop of fresh HD detail – from facial expressions to costume frippery, there’s more to see and enjoy.

The Blu-ray offers both the 155-minute standard version of the film and an extended, 172-minute edition (which Scott, in a special intro, explains is more than a director’s cut). Those 16 additional minutes consist of a few well-chosen deleted scenes that give further insight into characters great and small (remember the slave that has pre-fight bladder issues? We find out why he’s not go-to gladiatorial material), plus longer cuts of existing scenes.

Some of the extension isn’t essential – yes, Joaquin, we get it; Commodus is a seriously twisted Caesar geezer – but in balance it makes the movie a fresher, more thorough watch.

Meanwhile, the CGI stands up well in the HD world – some bloopers and poorer effects haven’t been cleaned up, though: those tigers still suck...

So, the picture’s a worthy upgrade from DVD – if not the hyper-real, eye-popping variety boasted by some Blu-rays – but Gladiator deservedly won one of its five Oscars for sound, and it’s here that the high-definition advantage is most apparent.

It may ‘only’ be a 5.1 mix, but the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is a room-filling spectacular. From the opening battle scenes (“unleash hell!”) to the gladiatorial contests, action sequences will provide your subwoofer and surround steering with a workout (and your face with a grin), while dialogue is clear and Zimmer’s music dynamic.

Finally, a mention for this double-disc’s 11 hours of extras. Lavish attention has been paid to just about every detail – whether that’s having separate audio commentaries for the different movie edits, or the U-Control feature that allows you to ‘tag’ scenes of interest when watching the film on disc one; then go behind the scenes of just those moments on disc two.

So, buy this disc, fire up your cinema system and unleash the high-definition might and majesty of Rome at home. Hail Ridley!

Also the uk copy has not been released yet.You might be right about same transfer but who as confirmed it for you that the transfer is the same. My source who is the best at getting early releases can only get hold of it tomo before he can start shipping them out.Love to know who has confirmed the same to you ,even though i think it will be the same transfer.
