That shouldn't stop people from calling and writing to complain though.

It is ridiculous. Let folks watch that and tell me Gladiator doesn't look much better than that!

I await a poll. Take J6P who watched Gladiator and have them score it based on highest 10. I know there will be more 8 and 9s than 5 and 6s. Forget all this DNR, EE, etc. etc which they couldn't care less about as they buy cause they like the movie and guarantee most will have flat out enjoyed viewing it without being distracted.

The Last Starfighter got a 2.5/5 (Video). While I haven't seen that movie (on blu-ray), Marty ripped it more so than gladiator.

Thanks, this page is where I saw the score but I think it was overall for the BD.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=5155

I did see 2.5 PQ now after checking further. Gladiator absolutely blows it away and gets .5 more for PQ???

Again, I'm not a big score person but use it to illustrate a point. I watch a BD and if I enjoy it with little to no distraction, than OK by me! Gladiator personally destroyed TLS, I couldn't even watch that whole movie.

I think people are forgetting how (I think) movies are graded on here....you can't just compare a movie made in the 2000s to a movie made in the 80s.....I think it is more about comparing how accurate the transfer is in regards to the original intended theatrical print/presentation..i.e, how much has the original print been tampered with to bring it to blu-ray...the effect of post/over-processing etc, what steps were taken to do a remaster/rescan/etc....and then the overall resulting PQ. That's just how I see it....i don't think it's about comparing one movie's PQ to another

It's not about "hey they made this old movie look great so they must be able to make this new one look awesome too"....it has to do with the process that went into each INDIVIDUAL film....all movies are not shot with the same cameras, film stocks, lighting conditions, etc....some movies undergo a complete restoration, other HD transfers are simply taken from old masters......for the record, film has an incredibly high resolution which is why so many older films can look amazing in HD. But something that works for one film doesn't necessarily work for another. If you decide to go by the mentality that "this [old film] has great PQ so this [new film] must have great PQ too" you will set yourself up for some disappointments

Ah, I was talking about something else entirely. I agree, and go a bit further: since films are shot with different lighting, equipment, film stock etc., you can't really compare the way one film looks to any other.

Just to add to everyone else's impressions:

I watched two movies last night: State of Play (on DVD) and Gladiator (on Blu). Aside from weight gain, Russell Crow looked the same in both movies through most of the scenes (PQ wise I mean). I am not kidding either. If you cannot see the EE in Gladiator, then you probably do not know what EE is. It is as if you went into your sharpness control and cranked it up to the highest setting.

I love the movie itself and as pointed out, the AQ on this blu is fine, but the PQ is slightly better than an upconverted DVD IMO (except for the extended scenes). These observations come from watching it via my projector and 92" screen. I will rewatch via my Kuro tonight to see if anything changes, but I already know it will not. All I can say is I am tempted to take a permanent marker and cross-out "Sapphire Series" on this blu and hope they remaster/re-transfer another Super Duper Sapphire Elite version in the future. However, I do not regret buying it because I love this movie and did not have the extended version before, I just do not consider this as "show-off blu-ray" material.

I watched the first 12 minutes, followed by a scene from 2:03:00 to 2:07:00 on the P1500. The latter contains seamless branching, I believe. Not a single glitch. Could be you have a bad pressing or maybe your player is about to give up the ghost, hard to say really.

edit: to make sure, I played the extended cut's execution scene from 1:48 to 1:53. No glitching there either.

I don't think getting abusive with customer service reps at Paramount a solution to any problems by the way. Are "glitches" with a certain player confirmed now?

Maybe his player went into shock at the image quality difference when it switched to the Extended Edition scenes?

I might have to add that I used my average 32 inch HDTV 1080i, Onkyo 606 receiver and Sony BDP-S350. All I can say is WOW what a presentation of Gladiator. I gave the Video a solid 4 because it doesnt jump out of the screen like the new releases do. The Video could have been a little better but I think it is acceptable and if Paramount does a re-release, I will be there to get it one more time. The Audio is light years ahead of the DVD version.
I have to agree with another reviewer on here who said that" it does matter what equipment you are using" it all changes for everyone.
I cannot wait to check it out on my 60 inch DLP and Denon 2500BTCI and 2808CI with Definitive Technology speakers all around. Everything with my main setup is much better then the Onkyo and Sony. So if you got a little Sammy or Panny and not good enough HDMI's I believe not just this but every movie will suffer dramatically.

If you love Gladiator just get it especially that the movie is $22.99 at amazon.com and you get $10 in rebates if you got the DVD which most of us still have.
Same goes for Braveheart and Forrest Gump, so in reality you can save $30 all together and I think thats already worth it. One more thing I didnt mind the DNR in Gladiator I thought it was fine the way it is.

Alright I am back with my final review of Gladiator after viewing it on my Mitsubishi 60 inch 1080P DLP, Denon 2500BTCI and Audioquest HDMI cables.

I dont know how people set up their equipment but I can only imagine that most of you DO NOT adjust your HDTV's properly and same goes for the cheap Sammy, Panny, Memorex etc. Bluray players most of you use. You cannot adjust the contrast, color, DNR, Gamma on cheap players period. What my Denon 2500 did to Gladiator should be experienced by everyone who has no idea of what they are doing.
I still saw some DNR but you know what it did NOT bother me, and the movie overall is extraordinary and never looked like the way it does with my equipment.
If you want the best out of your blurays DO NOT bother with anything but Denon, Marantz, Pioneer Elite and Sony ES.
The rest is just not worth your money or time. Also if you got a TV that is 5 years or older its time to get a new one.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Gladiator and now I can only imagine Braveheart which will be in my hands on Tuesday and only because Amazon shipped it to me via Ground and it should have been Second Day Air, oh well gotta wait for that, but again no offense to anybody but understand that you get what you pay for.
If you love Gladiator and got a decent setup go for it and enjoy!
noting wrong with gladiator!!!! do you work for paramount?

robert do you really think j6p is that stupid?i could line up 10 people right now that have zero interest in hd and put in potc in my player and jaws will drop.

this j6p thing is noting more then a excuse to justify a title thats a piece of crap by blu-ray standards.and the money spent on it.

two each its own,but you and others have paid paramount for a job not well done.i wonder if you would do the same if it was your bathroom or a paint job on a car.Mmmm.
