PR Nightmare? I really don't think a few over the top comments on some forums constitute a "PR nightmare". 95% or more of the potential buying audience will have never heard of any of that.

Sure the release is not a reference one but there are very few people saying it is a disaster and widespread reporting of those type of comments are the only ones that would cause a "PR nightmare".

Here's a small part of the What Hi-Fi? review of Gladiator.

http://community.whathifi.com/forums/t/295758.aspx

Ignore early US previews berating a poor visual transfer (did they expect Disney animation?) – you get Gladiator as Ridley Scott intended: filmic and epic. For every touch of (authentic) grain you get a dollop of fresh HD detail – from facial expressions to costume frippery, there’s more to see and enjoy.

I thought the stills on here looked, granted, they do not do the film justice. But, whenever a studio crams to full length films on a disc, wether it be theatrical and extended , there's going to be some downgrade in the quality.

As is the case with every transfer on the market, different viewers with different eyes and different equipment with different sensitivities and different expectations will inevitably see the same transfer in a radically different light than another, and it's up to each individual viewer to judge the quality of a disc within their own set of parameters.

There aren't two full-length films on the disc. The extended edition just adds in the extra footage to the theatrical cut via seamless branching.

That's one theory.

I haven't seen the bluray yet. I have read some reviews. The majority say that it looks ok, but not as good as it could have. This is a PR nightmare for a studio that is advertising a "Saphire edition" as the best darned thing since sliced cheese.

That is another theory.

I'm sure when I see it I won't be able to see all the complaints about the EE and DNR. However, I may notice that the image isn't as crisp as I thought it would be, and I may not.

I'm just saying for it to have turned out as anything less than awe inspiring, with such a popular movie and the saphire advertising, is a failure on the studios part and deserves at a minimum a statement.....and possibly down the road a redo or a "fix". Everyone is giving Braveheart good reviews and that is how this should be being recieved.

Noob Question....

I can not recognize DNR, EE or whatever else may be wrong in the movie. How can you tell if a movie has this done to it?

I was about to type the exact same thing. This is not a PR nightmare, lol.

In fact, no one outside of a few fanatical message boards knows/cares about this...

Ok bottom line is people are going to buy regardless of anything said....I know I don't really care what peoples reviews are simply because I love this movie. Any avid fan of this movie who has blu ray is going to buy this without any hesitation...

AMEN!!

Look for the grain that should be there. It's usually easiest to spot in backgrounds. They will look like miniscule flecks bouncing back and forth, from one frame to the next. Most everything else not in in motion will remain in the same spot, the grain will fluctuate because it is a different piece of film so it is not in the same spot as the previous frames.

Most people will watch it, praise it, and be completely ignorant to any DNR or EE issues people on several forums are discussing.

Sapphire release or not.... I don't think people are going to look at it as much other than a Marketing gimmick (which it is)

FURTHERMORE SUSAN...... I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to learn that many of them will watch this, and Braveheart, and say "Gladiator looked great, but Braveheart looked fuzzy"

And also one of my favorite films. I'm debating myself whether I should go ahead and put it in my Netflix queue or just settle for something less than top quality and stroll into Best Buy. Honestly, I may not ever have noticed anything had I never read reviews, but like some of you, I would not purchase it just out of principle.
I'd think when something is announced (if at all) it will be posted on Digital Bits first.
LOL, just saw that squid posted the same thing.

Where people buy from is important too, and it would be hard to ignore reviews at the following online stores:

amazon.com
amazon.co.uk
Best Buy

etc
I'm not from the US so don't know where else you might buy Blu-Rays from (online), but bad reviews in the above will sway customers for sure.
