Will all the people who havent watched the Gladiator blu yet and are still debating and arguing over the transfer please exit the thread now. How can you base your own opinion off of others reviews? The Amazon idiots putting up 1 star reviews before they movie is even released is bad enough.....the same people saying they canceled their preorder or wrote letters are the same people acting like they watched the movie....

yeah i personally wasn't troubled by those shots or the Ext Ed shots, it was the other 90% of the film. I knew that sequence had a dream-like feel to it, with the ironic emotional music in the background while maximus' dudes are slaughtering the injured.

I want to watch the theatrical version and get another viewing session in before I commit to a number.

I think this stems from misinformation, but I will leave that discussion for another thread.

As for the topic on the absence of grain, there are a number of factors to consider, including (but not limited to) the quality of the source material, the director's input, the studio's input, as well as feedback from focus groups. I think too much weight has been placed on the opinions of focus group participants, whose wishes are likely to differ from the director's. I am of the belief that the director's vision should always be observed and implemented, and that the audience should accept what s/he intended to convey. However, if a director chooses to revisit the source material and wishes to have it cleaned up, s/he is well within her right to do so, and I would respect what is offered eventually because it's in line with his/her vision. If the director oversees the effort and scrutinizes the production, but something still goes awry between this and the Blu-ray / DVD pressing, the studio should assume the blame for their shortcomings.

It is my belief that the general public can't be trusted to make sound judgments, much less empowered with the ability to dictate what the final product should look like; this is why I hate input from focus groups, polls, etc. The most popular opinion isn't always the correct one. Someone with little to no knowledge on a subject should not affect what film aficionados expect to see because J6P doesn't like this or that. I know why studios do it; the eventual decision will yield greater returns, and for studios, it has always been about the bottom line. Unless you wield political clout with the studios, whatever finds its way onto a disc is left to studio heads to decide.

While I do think that those who freely participate on these forums are more knowledgeable than your average pedestrian and have a vested interest in this hobby, disinformation and misinformation still persists, reinforced by pride and stubbornness. I'll admit that I'm no encyclopaedia on the subject of Blu-ray, but I do keep an open mind.

Are you ever going to answer my question? Youve dodged it 3 times now.

Is it a good transfer?

No kidding. We get that. We understand that. Add DNR and glowing halos and it kinda ruins the whole sureal look he created. Do you get it?

I have asked at least 3 times.

Does he consider it a good overall transfer? Yes or no?

I dont want a number. I dont want to read "better than DVD".

I say it is not good. Its not the worst, but its poor, not good.

Why wont Greg answer me?

Maybe he does.

I see he responded to Surfdude that he desires more viewing time.

Well, I finally got the chance to watch both Gladiator and Braveheart.

Gladiator: I had originally cancelled me preorder, ended up picking it up anyway - had to see what all the fuss was about. Looks exactly like a digitally manipulated HDTV broadcast. This is simply HDTV broadcast quality, and that's nowhere near good enough for BluRay. Better than DVD? Yes. Is that good enough? No. For one of the highest grossing movies of all time this got a startlingly disappointing transfer. Would probably not have noticed that missing CG had I not been specifially looking for it (and I was) but the horrendous heavily-manipulated-by-EE-and-DNR coupled with it being a lower quality transfer was present throughout (apart from the extended scenes which made for an odd visual contrast) and could not be ignored. 5 - 6 / 10

Braveheart: Holy shit, Honestly. Superb transfer all around. From my viewing experience no complaints whatsoever (unless you count "Why can't all releases look like this" as a complaint.) They just did a fantastic job on this one, not much else to say. If whatever group of staff that were responsible for this BluRay release were made to be responsible for every one of Paramount's their quality would be stuff of legend. 10 /10.
