Glad to see RAH's take on it, even though, based on his previous writings for other discs, I pretty much guessed his response. Hopefully his and a few other strong voices will eventually lead to something getting done.

I think my blockbuster gladiator bd arrive today, i will try both on my ps3 and oppo to see what is all the fuss about, in the pass oppo does better than ps3 in some blu-ray that often fuss about noise or grain like X3

So people who have watched the UK version, can confirm that the PQ is 100% identical to the US version? Same codec, bitrate etc?

Or folks perhaps bought a cheapo for themselves.

The majority of those folks will have no problem whatsoever with this BD. And you can sure bet the studios need all the J6Ps they can get to keep this niche going! Gladiator on BD? They love the movie and that is why they bought it and will continue to purchase others, not to scrutinize the quality for which they will not even give a second thought about.
Hope everyone and their dog gets into Blu-ray. Blu's will be cheaper, players will be everywhere and selection will be great. I hope Blu-rays don't go the way of SACDs.

i used the Ratatouille BD calibration tool to re-calibrate my PQ settings, and Gladiator did look a little better. If you havent' calibrated your PQ settings (and yes, i realize the Ratatouille tool isn't 'proper' calibration) then realize this may be making the PQ not look as good as it could.

Just saw it last night, is definite a average transfer for blu-ray, not a bad transfer. The PQ is improve over DVD that is for sure. They did heavy sharp the picture to remove the noise.

True.
Those with a puny 50" or smaller screen will be happy with this release or any upconverted DVD.

Until they pop in their DVD version of Gladiator in their BD player on their 32" HDTV and say, "it looks the same."

Then they will keep the BD player because of the upconvert capabilities and buy those $5 DVD's at Walmart, Target and Best Buy because the same title on blu-ray is twice as much or at least $10 more for new releases.

You do realize that viewing distance is as much a factor as screen size.

...right?

Not sure if anyone has bought both versions but it's safe to say they are probably the same.

Um, I was being sarcastic. My post was making light of one of the reasons(small screen size) they(AV enthusists) believe people justified this release as being adequate.
