The thing is, I don't consider people like you and I the 'average' consumer. Assuming you and others read as I do, we are well-informed of the quality of Blu-Rays on the market--we know what we are getting into before we buy one.

If they don't offer an exchange program, I'll kick myself in the ___ for buying what I already knew was inferior. However, I'll be far-more upset for the person that bought it and didn't know, than for myself.

How would they go about re-releasing it so soon if they hadnt had the luck that this year is the 10th anniversary?

Would they have re-released it?

No better time than now to set a precedent.

The point I was trying to make is that reissues will happen (the time frame is unimportant, only that it will take place). Would it ease the pain if the reissue happened one or two years later, rather than, say, eight or nine months?

Would folks still insist on a replacement program if the remastered edition is pegged for release two years from the date of the Sapphire edition? At what point does someone draw the line by paying outright for a remastered edition without reservation?

Anyone posting on here claiming they should be entitled to an exchange program needs to ask themselves why they bought the shoddy version in the first place.
I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy.
The net was ablaze with uproar over the transfer weeks before the disc even streeted. Some of you just couldn't wait and picked it up, whilst the rest of us boycotted it and stamped our feet - inevitably contributing to the eventual rethink from Paramount and Universal.

Let those of us that waited patiently for the real deal enjoy this one.

My mind is still boggled by those of you that are so hell bent on there NOT being an exchange implemented and ripping on the people who DO want one. It makes no sense to me at all since it doesn't affect you one d@mn bit. In fact, it really pisses me off the more I start thinking about it. This new "anniversary edition" is nothing more than their cover, I bet they never come out with a statement about the other being subpar. Infact, I bet they don't even pull the Sapphire edition and will sell both copies. They know some people will buy both versions. The fact this is re-released a mere 6 months after initial release is sickening.

Think about this, if they were planning on releasing the movie for the movies anniversary they could have easily just pushed the released date back 6 months or less, NOPE instead they released the Sapphire edition which was their only initial plan all along and then when they realized it was fubar'd they went to work on a remaster and thought, hey let's call it the "anniversary edition" so we don't have to admit our fault, implement an exchange program, or kiss any customers @sses.

Sorry to single you out like that, but you cannot demand a replacement program knowing very well that this was a problematic release, you said so yourself that you had no intensions of supporting a bad transfer, and apparently you then decided to buy it anyways and now you're demanding a replacement?
I'm sorry, it is your own fault.

I don't care if you single me out, I had Amazon gift certificate and it was $10 so I got it for free basically. Doesn't matter, that doesn't mean the studio gets a free pass on this BS. This whole it's your fault, my fault, everybody's fault nonsense has to freakin stop on here, are you guys for your fellow board members and collectors or are you gonna side with the studio over shoddy stuff like this while all your blu-ray forum supporter friends get to spend more unnecessary money buying the "actual, this is what we should have done from start, super special edition". This is my last spill on this subject, this thread does nothing but piss me off and make me NOT want to frequent the board as much. Forgot to add that YES I CAN DEMAND A REPLACEMENT PROGRAM, it's not my fault the studio thought they could get away with being shady on this release. Besides, did YOU think it would be a mere 6 months before re-releasing with the better transfer!!!!!??? NOBODY on here or anywhere would have thought that! I thought it would be maybe 2 more years, thats why I decided to use my gift card for the fubar'd version so I could watch it NOW. Just think about it, 6 freakin months they waited, that's it!! For freaks sake some people can't even grow a full beard in that time span, LOL.

The studio gets a free pass when people buy crappy discs. People who buy crappy discs get a free pass if the studio replaces them.

Yeah, everyone remembers where they were the day they heard the Gladiator transfer was no good. Just like the moon landing. Internet guys have such great perspective.

The people (and probably the majority of consumers) that bought it and don't comb the Internet for blu reviews are the ones who should really be compensated.

Moreover, I can't fathom why some people so adamantly oppose an exchange program when it doesn't affect them.

Starscream

If you got it for free anyways why are you so angry?
You decided to get it anyways, free will and all and now you're pi****?
You said so yourself "Do not reward the studios with releases like this."

It is in fact your own fault, so don't get angry at me.

Because they're clamoring for freebies they don't deserve. It's the entitlement that gets me. They owe you nothing. Paramount delivered Gladiator in "HD". Many were quite adamant that it's a good disc. Enjoy your good disc.

I bought this release assuming:

1) There wouldn't be a rerelease of the title for quite some time as this was one of the Sapphire releases.

2) If they did find there was a reason to remaster the film, there would either be a replacement program put in place or, again, they wouldn't release it for at least a couple of years (like Disney did with Gangs of New York).

So yes, the fact that they announced a remastered version (with pretty much the same features from what I can tell) 6 short months after the bad version does seem wrong to me.

As for the people against the replacement program, I cannot understand any of you. "You should've known better" is not the right way to address this problem as not everyone comes to Blu-ray.com to read a thread about missing arrows before making a purchase. And thinking that people should be punished for buying the original release is absolutely rediculous. Why would a person be so rude about something that doesn't effect them in the slightest?

The picture is flawed. That is why people are expecting a replacement program.

This may not come out in the US within 6mos of the original, might be more like xmas time. I dont believe an official US date has been set but I'd imagine they'd sell more around the holidays or father's day.

But, some of the quickest Blu-ray double dips:
Natural Born Killers > Natural Born Killers DC
Polar Express > Polar Express 3D (Anaglyph) w/ lossless audio.
Troy > Troy DC

These all had a ~1yr between the first release and superior double dip. Note none are paramount/universal.

You just know the studio had both masters sitting there and was like. Yeah, lets release this one first, then this one a year later! Brilliant! Paramount/Universal has actually double dipped the least out of any of the major studios I can think of. Its just this incident is particularly aggrevating because of the visual splendor of Gladiator. Lets hope the fix the clipping in the audio, too, though I doubt that will happen.

I bet Fox will release Avatar in 2D first, then double dip the 3D edition there. Actually go over to your shelf of pixar/cg animated films. Take a nice look at your collection. All of those will be double dips probably by the end of 2011 to give BD3D a good library.

I posted when this was first released that there would be 10th anniversary edition next year. They didn't just release a botched transfer on accident. They knew it was bad, but also knew that Gladiator was one of the most anticipated releases on BD and that most people were willing to double dip. I don't feel sorry for anyone who bought the Sapphire release. It sucks, but you really should've seen it coming.

You realize the films you listed are completely different versions though, right? Gladiator is receiving the same features, just with remastered video and a different name.

Also, Troy was only released as a Director's Cut on Blu-ray. Plus, those were all WB titles. How many Paramount rereleases/remasters have there been?

Lets compare apples to apples here, a rerelease/double dip is a different situation than what's happening with Gladiator. Releasing a film in 3D is different than releasing a poor version of a film only to remaster it and rerelease it in less than a year.
