Default Looks like a mixed bag?

Anybody else notice that there is a mixed bag between the 6 posted comparison shots. I mean it's like 50-50. For some shots, the original Blu-ray looks better in some departments and in others it's the other way around. Very, Very frustrating. I honestly am not sure which one to buy now as I've held off all this time. For some shots, the color looks funky on the old, but good on the new, only to look at another shot and go WTF on the new one. Some shots show greater detail on the new over the old, then again on others it's the opposite.

In my opinion, all of the new screenshots looked better (even if only marginally in some cases). What looks like "lower detail" in some shots seems to be a great reduction in EE. I think the new shots look much more realistic and I am very excited to replace my old Blu-ray.

The difference is about as dramatic as Gangs of New York. Except there was no exchange in that case and the new Blu is still priced higher than many new releases!

For me it's 100-0. One looks like film. The other doesn't.

This.

As always, it's important to remember a screenshot represents 1/24th of a second of a highly compressed video stream, and can be misleading. To my eyes there isn't even a comparison, the new version looks like a new movie, the old version is catalog trash of the most rancid sort.

And I'm glad I bought the first one!

1. I got an additional discount for buying it along with Braveheart.
2. The paramount $10 rebate for owners of the DVD was still going on, so I got that. The net cost ended up being $7.99 + tax and a stamp.
3. I'll be getting the new one free of charge, so it's like upgrading twice (the first one was still a clear improvement over the DVD)!

I agree. I haven't seen Gladiator in years, but I remember the blue of twilight for the forest areas and that's gone in the new version.

I wasn't impressed by the comparison shots either. One of them just looks like you threw a blue tint over it.

I have the Sapphire Series version and think it looks great. A nice improvement over the original dvd and I didn't notice any missing arrows at the opening sequence either. There's still plenty of arrows for everyone.

If the new version is any better, I'm sure it won't be by much.

Okay, are they just going to swap out the discs in the Sapphire Series, or are they coming out with a brand new release with new packaging?

My guess would be the packaging will look the same but like with Saving Private Ryan, you'll be able to differentiate with a new UPC.

Awesome. Hopefully it happens in the next month or so. I need a good Gladiator transfer in my life.

My guess is it'll drop when American Beauty hits so retailers can offer deals to get both at the same time.

+1

The color timing discrepancies may be up for debate, but the actual picture quality improvement is so undeniable that it really comes to show how embarrassingly subpar the previous release was.

(all this, of course, judging from the screen captures, but I hope playing the disc will only support that)

Anyone know when that $10 upgrade rebate expires? I got in on it for Braveheart, but didn't purchase Gladiator because of all the drama over it and curious if I should buy the current Blu-ray version and take advantage of the rebate (since I have the DVD UPC symbol still) and then do the disc exchange for the upcoming "revised" release, or if I should simply buy the revised version when it hits retail. Just curious when the $10 upgrade rebate ends if anyone knows. Thanks!

I usually despise when people say the very thing I'm about to say, so I guess that makes me a hell of a hypocrite, but the new BD's color timing is so how I remember GLADIATOR looking in the theatre...
