Film purists must feel violated yet again.
It was pretty obvious that the movie's color timing has been altered, right from the very first shot of the new transfer

Im assuming this new color timing job is approved by Ridley Scott, because I honestly do not see the studio going to the trouble of going through that process themselves.

Have you seen this dust up. The exchange between an independent filmaker and the reviewer over the 16 mm camera used to film parts of Gladiator is classic. (The reviewer is right)

Yes; this happens on many modern transfers; Bladerunner: The Final Cut was the same. Sometimes the new color timing looks good, but most of the time it looks lousy. I shall stick with my DVD, as I dislike this modern practice of changing color timing as much as I dislike DNR and EE.

Colors are not that different. This argument is nonsense.

If I were to buy this from Amazon right now, would I receive the corrected version? I hear that the UPC seal is yellow on the new, much better transfer, so how can I make sure that Amazon sends the correct one? Have they collected all of the lousy ones so there isn't a problem?

IMPORTANT INFO:

Some People have Problems with the altered Color-Timing of The New Blu Ray.

But everything is fine because Ridley Scott himself approved the new Master.

Charles De Lauzirika said this in his HTF Forum:
"Ridley Scott personally supervised and approved the new master. I know because I was there with him at each session. He's very happy with the new "Gladiator" master. As he is with the new "Alien" master, by the way."

Source: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/foru...-color-changes

So i think we can stop the color discussion now.

I do not care if Ridley Scott approved it or not. He approved the recolor-timing of Bladerunner and a number of his other films and I do not like those changes either. It was not how the films appeared in the theater, and I do not see the problem in continuing to discuss whether or not people like the color changes.

It was probably a high quality transfer for DVD use 10 years ago... just woefully outdated for blu-ray purposes.

Don't buy them, then. Problem solved, circle jerked.

The first Gladiator transfer on Blu-Ray was dissipointing on a Blu-Ray level however it looked better then even the best upconverted DVD. It had problems with edgement but was hardly the travesty people potrayed it as.

I will not buy them; the post was simply to state that I see no reason why discussion of people's responses to the color changes should not continue, as people's views on color timing interest me. I confess that I have no idea what "circle jerked" means.

Ok, but are you really that upset in terms of gladiators color changes?

Did you look at my comparison?:
http://comparescreenshots.slicx.com/comparison/69939/

That really isn't a complete change. In my opinion the colors in the old one are not right because its a very old master.
In the new one the colors just look more strong and natural (blue sky).

Greetings

Greetings, SwissHD! Yes; I saw your comparison. Sometimes the new color looks really good, but generally I do not like it and prefer the original. You are right that it is not a complete change, and it is better than some other color correction I have seen.

Nonetheless, I do not believe that the old master lacked fidelity to the original in terms of colors. In my opinion, this new Blu-ray is an actual revision of the color palette of the film by the director, rather than an attempt to restore the theatrical color palette.

Thank you for posting that first link though. I suspected Ridley Scott was behid the change as soon as I saw screenshots of the new Blu-ray, but now I know for certain.

How do you know the color timing on the DVD and original blu-ray transfer was spot-on correct? I trust the director, since he did, after all, make the film. Andf if he color timed the new BD, then that's how it's supposed to look.
