Default Picture Quality

I got the newly remastered version and I have to say that I am not overly impressed with the image. Now I never saw the original release and I am positive I have the new release, because I don't believe there would be so many complaints on the quality that I saw. Nevertheless, the image is not that great. Some shots are beautiful, while others remain only decent. In comparing it to the original dvd upscaled, it is definitely better. I do not know if it was worth the $27 I payed only because with a title like this, we should get reference quality and not just good. The sound however was outstanding.

That's how the first release is described, dude doublecheck to be sure you have the remastered and not the first release.

Sorry majorkonig41, but I kinda disagree. I popped in my remastered disc in last night and skimmed through the film for about an hour. The PQ on the new disc is incredible. No more disappearing arrows or fireballs during the opening battle, no more DNR applied, no excessive EE throughout the picture, and the film grain has been completely restored. A few months ago I tried to watch the disc with the original transfer and I had to stop because I found it to be unwatchable, especially during the opening battle. The new remaster is an excellent improvement over the original release, which in my opinion just looked like an upconverted DVD picture placed on a Blu-Ray disc.

If I were to rate the new transfer, I'd give it a 9.5/10, as compared to the original which I would have given a 3.5/10.

Finally got around to mailing my disc this morning. The CSR quoted me an approximate 1 month turn around, but it looks like forum members are receiving their replacement disc a lot faster than that. For those who have already received their new disc from Paramount's exchange program, how long did it take form the time you mailed it in to the time you received the new disc?

I believe those who already have the disc found the new version at retail, not through the replacement program.

how do canadians tell the difference between the two versions?, because the layout on the back cover is different
It is different due to them smushing all of the French onto the back cover, but the '2 disc-set' label is still there on the back. But I checked my FS this morning too, still all old discs.

I am almost positive I have the new release. No 2 Disc set on back of slipcase or case. Different number on bottom of case. There was evident grain and no shots looked like they were DNR'd. Plus no disappearing arrows from the first battle. I also compared the screencaps of the new version and the one I have are the same. Maybe I just expected more.

When I reviewed the original Gladiator in September of 2009 I was generous and gave it about a 6/10. If the remastered version look as good as the screen caps I will easily give it an 8 or 9/10.

is there a easy way to tell whether or not retailers have the new remastered version, such as a UPC label???

I would look at the serial number embedded on the underside of the disc, in the inner ring. It is small and hard to read but I imagine the Canadian discs are identical to the US ones. If not you can always call or email Paramount and ask. Considering that the UK is also getting a replacement offer I would expect Canadians to get the same offer.

I called Paramount yesterday and ordered my replacement. 3-4 weeks is what I was told. In terms of being able to tell whether or not I already had the remastered version, Paramount asked me to look on the shiny side of the disc on the center circle and to look for a number that started with NA. Mine ended in 1 and that indicated that I had the old version. Also, they asked me if I had a white UPC or a yellow UPC. I mentioned white...also an indicator according to Paramount. They never mentioned anything about "missing 2-disc" labeling on the package. At any rate, that's what I have to share.

Yep! Just mailed out my disc this morning. I was wondering as well how long it really took?

In your opinion, what are the shortcomings?

I'm not sure what your idea of "reference" quality is (a description i've always found very stupid), but a blu-ray can only look as good as the original film... not sure what you expected but this is probably as good as the film can possibly look on the format.

I've also noticed that the remastered one does not have security tape on the case either. Just one more thing to look at to know which one you are getting.

I noticed that too on mine, all of the ones at my best buy that were remastered didn't have the security tape

Just got back from best buy and they only had 1 remastered copy. I was able to price match walmart.com and got it for $22.46. Also there was no security sticker at the top. I'm not sure if this is true with all remastered copies but the one I found stood out because it was the only one without a $10 rebate sticker on the slipcover
