It truly is mind boggling that this thread has degenerated into a 'WHAT AM I LOOKING FOR?!' piece, and has never recovered since. It's not complicated.

If you're looking at a white bar code release that contains the remaster, the back of the slipcover as well as the back of the Blu-ray case itself will have '2 Disc Set' removed from the lower right hand corner.

If you want the more obvious way to find the remastered version, wait until you see a copy with a yellow barcode at your local retailer.

And yes, if you're STILL confused, just use your eyes. The difference isn't minimal by any means.

Question To all who've seen the newer release...

Being that Director Ridley Scott was at the scene guiding the new release, did he paint out the GAS CAN in the back of that over-turning chariot?

>01:26:37 ~ 01:26:38< for those who don't know what I'm writing about in the movie...

I know Rome was pretty darn advance in military technology, but gas powered chariots really pushes that beyond the believability scale for myself~

There TWO different and completely seperate packaging alterations that denote the 4k remastered version:

The original packaging alteration removed the 2-Disc Set from above the Paramount logo on the cover art but the UPC is still white. DO NOT, I SAY AGAIN DO NOT USE THE SLIPCOVER AS THE INDICATOR.

New inventory being sent to retailers will have a yellow UPC. THE COPIES WITH A YELLOW UPC WILL STILL HAVE THE WORDS "2-DISC SET" ABOVE THE PARAMOUNT LOGO

ONCE AGAIN, THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT AND COMPLETELY SEPERATE PACKAGING ALTERATIONS.

{Why can't this information be put in a sticky so people can stop asking? It is as if this has to be posted almost everyday since it seems like those asking questions do not want to read back a few pages or use the search tool at the top of a thread).

There is one thing that I find really funny about this thread. I have seen umpteen posts asking how to tell the difference between the cluster and the remaster. Why are we so outraged about a transfer, calling it a travesty even, yet we can't even tell by simply scanning through the movie to see if we have the remaster or not even though it's been hailed as a benchmark in blu-ray pq?

I'm not saying the remaster isn't a vast improvement...it is. I just find all the confusion hilarious.

Default Gladiator remaster?

I just purchased from Wal Mart the case with white UPC, no 2 disc set on the case and 2009 listed. Another poster mentioned about serial type numbers printed on the back of the disc. The back of my disc did not have any number close to what the other poster said. I played the disc and I still am confused if I have the remastered disc. I think that is why everyone is so confused. I will just return the disc for one with a yellow UPC. I guess the yellow UPC is the only clear indicator that you have the remastered disc.

Okay, nothing against you so don't take this response as an attack on you. Please.

Is common reading comprehension that difficult?

Gah! Since this is still too much to handle why not just let Deluxe handle your exchanges?

IN THE SIMPLEST ENGLISH POSSIBLE:

How hard is it to understand that if you buy ANY copy WITHOUT the words "2-Disc Set" above the Paramount logo that you do, in fact, have the 4k remastered version.

How difficult is it to understand that if you buy ANY copy WITH a yellow UPC that you do, in fact, have the 4k remastered version.

STOP CONFUSING YOURSELVES BY LOOKING FOR ANY OTHER INDICATORS. THERE IS NO MAGIC DA VINCI CODE THAT WILL REVEAL THE SECRETS OF SCOTT FREE PRODUCTIONS. THERE ARE NO SECRET WORDS THAT WILL REVEAL HOW TO BE A GLADIATOR.

JUST KEEP IT SIMPLE AND LOOK FOR ONE OF THOSE TWO VARIATIONS AND YOU WILL BE FINE.

Here's what the yellow UPC looks like on the remastered Gladiator BD which I saw at the local BB. All the other copies had the white UPC code and no "2-Disc Set" which means, all the copies at my local BB store are the remastered versions.

Check your disc again. The number is there but it's hard to see.

another solid indicator if you opened it is the "vanishing fireball method". If your fireballs vanish...its the bad version. If they dont...remastered.

The ones with the yellow UPC have "2 disc set" printed above the Paramount logo on the back of the printed sleeve on the BD case itself, not the outer cardboard slipcase, which does NOT have "2-disc set" printed above the logo. (It's still printed on the spine.) At least the ones I've seen are like this. Further, the yellow-UPC cases have "2010" (instead of "2009") printed at the bottom on the back of the BD case sleeve.

Bottom line: If the sleeve on the BD case itself (not the outer slipcase) has a yellow UPC or if it has a white UPC and there's nothing printed above the Paramount logo on the lower right corner on the back, then you've got the remastered version.....

I watched a few scenes over the weekend. For me, the pq is serviceable, if not ideal.

But since Paramount is doing a free exchange (I already went through this w/ Saving Private Ryan), I might take them up on the offer.

Thanks to those for the detailed exchange info and links. Appreciate it.

Seriously, exchange it as soon as you can, while they're still doing it. You thought the original Blu-ray was "serviceable"? Prepare to be blown away by the remaster.

I think the reason is obvious. If you open the blu ray packaging, and find that it is the old one, you'd have to go through the hassle of replacing it using the replacement program. It is not defective, after all, so the store will not take it back. I did have the older DNRed blu ray, and it was very average PQ (sold it). If the new one is really good, the difference would be obvious. to be fair, I havent seen the new one (yet). But why would I knowingly buy the old one again?

I think the reason is, most people don't have both to A/B (compare) the PQ.

That would be the ultimate:

Have the option of buying either one, or both... Take them home... compare the two of 'em... and keep the one you feel you like better

If you can't compare the screenshots online and see which one you have, something is very wrong with your TV.

Default What should I be looking for?

I have the original Gladiator that came out in 09 and not the new remastered one. I don't see a problem with the quality of the picture. Is there something I should be looking for? A certain part of the film? The PQ is definitely better than a 3 and I can't see how a remastered version can be much better than this if at all.

What is that people are so up in arms about?

Thanks!
