The DE remastered release does have better PQ than the US remastered release. I have it and have done direct comparisons.

Thanks, so the best is the German remastered version?

Out of interest, is there an English language release of the Extended that's of a similar high quality to the German, or reasonably close?

The DE release is English friendly. It's this one: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Gladiator-Blu-ray/10420/

Also, here's the comparison if you're curious: http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=504...0&a=1&go=0&l=1

Indeed, and yet look how low that average bitrate is! The Euro disc has to contend with all those extra DTS audio tracks on top of nearly 3 hours of HD video material, and that it still manages to beat the US version makes it an absolute masterpiece of an encode. Superb stuff.

Isn't the DE encode the same as on the UK remaster?

It's the same everywhere except North America.

Right, I think the DE was the cheapest at the time I bought it.

A long while back I nearly bought the US one thinking "extra bitrate etc - bound to be a little bit better". Glad I didnt!

I don't doubt your comparison, since I don't have the german version. At the time, remember the word even at this site from reviewers was the master used for the US version and German are the same.I remember the stink over Paramount releasing the DNR version in the first place. So why would Paramount turn around and release a different remaster then the German version ? 2 different masters?? I mean when this kind of thing happens (most recent Star Trek 2 director's cut ) the studio has to lose money issuing new corrected discs. I think this was joint release with Universal? Maybe they did a different remaster, but again that doesn't seem like something a studio would do,since at that time Universal DNR'S most of there releases. It will be interesting to see If they ever do a true 4K release what happens with the PQ, since they will have to do a new master for that.

I'm not seeing any difference between the US remastered and the German in those caps.

Have you had your yearly optometrist checkup yet? Also, one of my eyes is better than 20/20.

lol no but apparently I should.

Only screencap 10 (with Phoenix and the guards) shows some difference, with better resolved grain on the German release. Otherwise the differences are either invisible or so miniscule that they might as well be. At least to me eyes

Honestly, you probably won't notice a difference on a smaller screen.

There are multiple processes when creating a Blu-ray.

Both the Universal and Paramount releases feature the same un-DNR'd master, it's just that both studio's have done their own encoding and authoring, which is why the number of audio tracks is different between the two, and thus it so happens that the Universal release features the better encode.

Does the U.K. Universal disc have the same encoding as the German disc?

That's the copy I've got.

Yes.

I have just updated my previous post. I meant to say that the Universal release has the superior encode which includes the UK and DE remastered releases.

I'm glad you said it. I see none.

Blown up, I see a slight difference with the edge to the U.S.

The US Paramount release features a lot of artifacting in the shape of macroblocking due to the compression having issues with the grain structure:

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=...=1&x=534&y=196

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=...=1&x=485&y=287

To be honest, the difference in motion is going to be very hard to spot, even on large screens, but a difference is there.

Forget about all that zooming in malarkey, if people can't see how ragged the US compression is in this shot at normal size (just look at her cheek!) then I don't know what to say: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go...46984&i=11&l=1

Is it something that's all that obvious in motion? Perhaps not. But the Euro encode is still superior.
