Lots of DNR and EE, with footage of extended scenes from a better transfer.

The transfer will be "fixed" when the eventual double dip comes down the road.

The screenshots, in this case, were spot on and have been backed up and confirmed by Bill Hunt. EE, halo'ing and DNR all are easily seen in the theatrical version. I wonder if Paramount/Universal will do anything about this....
Yes, Bill did confirm the issues. He also concluded that it was watchable but not good enough for the format as a whole or for enthusiasts. He did not confirm it was the absolute disaster, “piece of s***” many were claiming it to be. Most of the debate was not about who was right and who was wrong; it was about having credible sources providing professional reviews and opinions.

I am not apologizing for those around here who got into name calling and general childishness, but this type of gloating is not helpful. There have been manipulations in the past, and screenshots have been proven reliable before, and they have been very wrong before. People who suspended judgement have no reason to "eat crow" as you put it, they were simply being pragmatic. Waiting for credible facts is not something to be scorned.

THIS IS A HUGE TITLE and someone is going to pay for this blotched attempt I'm sure ......I already smell a re-release. It's probably being done as we speak.

I think people also have to put things into perspective, the dvd was atrocious by todays standards (plenty of film damage was present throughout the entire film, edge enhancement was extremely noticeable, lacked any fine detail even for a dvd). I have seen the extended edition on dvd but that was many years ago and preferred the theatrical version and hence never upgraded my dvd, as a result I can't recall if it had a different transfer or not. Hence the problems I refer to in the dvd may have been rectified in re-releases of the dvd (I'm not sure), but the copy I have (the one that was first released) looks as if it is clearly sub-par compared to the blu. Hence I can't imagine many people (outside of demographics such as this one), will care, in fact I imagine many may even love that they can't see any of that "speckle stuff" (grain).

That being said, if the problems are half as bad as reported I shan't be buying this blu until I find it for $10au or less (though the lossless audio is making me want to buy, buy, buy, but I can live with my dvd with dts audio for now).

This does piss me off but i'm glad that we at least know about it before everyone bought it and felt ripped off. This Tuesday i'm just going to pick up Braveheart and hold off on Gladiator untill a new version is released probabaly next year some time

Best part is that by not getting gladiator this week i save myself 30 bucks and can afford groceries for the week...I'll be king of castle

I will hold out on Gladiator. Sucks because it was the one title I have been waiting for. Will pickup Braveheart for now.

I guess you didn't own a DVD player or VHS player, since you can find tons of things wrong with those transfers.

Hypocritical? I think so.(well unless you really didn't own either of those, in which case I'd ask why are you here?)
But 99% of the people where watching DVD & VHS on 27" or less 4:3 TV's.
Not like today where the average HDTV screen size is 37" and lack of detail in PQ are exposed due to the higher resolution of the sets.
And 10% or more have 60" or larger for their HD home theater systems, which exposes even more issues on bad transfers.

Disney has yet to have a replacement program for the travesty that was Gangs of New York, so I don't see this happening, although it is a different studio.

To be honest...

The vast majority of people even with those big sets likely don't notice too many problems with any release. I think we're in a small minority on places like this.

After following this and other threads about the PQ issues with Gladiator, I think I will just wait on purchasing Gladiator. I'm really trying to avoid double-dipping on BR's, especially when I know in advance of quality issues.

I'm sure it will look like an improvement over SDVD, but I'm not chomping at the bit to get this Blu right away. What will be interesting though, will be how Paramount handles this.

I've been dreaming of Gladiator since it was announced. Braveheart will be a blind-buy. I'm sure it will be good. I've watched many good movies with Gibson lately (we were soldiers for example).

Step one completed. Put it atop my queue about two weeks ago and I'm going to get a copy from Netflix which will be shipped today.

Step two is going to BB tomorrow morning and getting Braveheart and Gladiator together for $10 off the total. The store is very close and I will not have the BD until the afternoon post delivery and I want to take advantage of the price. I'm also interested in who else is buying when I'm there and also curious of these releases make some folks jump the fence and buy a player.

Step three is to watch the BD rented from netflix ASAP and probably more than once for parts of it also and then decide. I have three three BD players and two displays. I already watched Braveheart and it is very very good.

So it is as easy as that and I'll judge it for myself! I guess if you want to fit me for a straight jacket ....

not at all!!! i'm totally taking advantage of best buy's price 2morrow!!!

if it's that bad of a release (has to be terrible for me to get rid of a movie as awesome as this) then i'll list it on ebay and sell it on there b/c there will always be someone out there that isn't watching this movie w/a magnifying glass looking for DNR and EE that wants it for a good price.
