To Whom it may concern,
I have been an avid DVD and now Bl-ray collector for 20 years. I also have been and still am a fan of a lot of your movies either in a theater or at home. I am writing you now to let you know my deepest concern for the quality of your recently released Gladiator Blu-ray. It is now Tuesday September 1st at 12:37 pm which tells you how concerned I am. I rented Braveheart the other day and could not be happier, so I was even more excited to get my hands on Gladiator which I have been looking forward to for a long time. To my surprise the video quality does not match up to Braveheart whatsoever! I am extremely let down. I know that buying a product is taking a chance, but after seeing Braveheart Sapphire, I thought for sure that the gamble had been minimized. I do not expect a refund. I do expect though that you please respond to my concerns about this issue. I only buy the highest quality titles and the fact that you named it "Sapphire series" I thought that would insure this. I was wrong Thank you for your time Sincerely, Stanley Piantwhistle |

Well guys I'm watching the extended edition and the sound is excellent. HOWEVER, I can see why people complained about DNR. There is a lot of detail but you can tell in a lot of shots that grain was scrubbed out so one has to wonder how good this movie would've looked otherwise.

Here is a copy of my email sent to Paramount:
Dear Paramount, First of all, let me tell you how happy I am with your support of the Blu-Ray format. My family has enjoyed hours of entertainment with regards to many of your releases on the format. I was very excited when you announced your "Sapphire" series and the release of "Forrest Gump", "Gladiator", and "Braveheart" on Blu-Ray. All three of those movies are classics in my opinion and I pre-ordered both "Braveheart" and "Gladiator" at Amazon.com in anticipation of the release of these movies on Blu-Ray. That said, it has come to my attention via a very trusted and reputable review by Bill Hunt at "The Digital Bits", along with several other HD movie forums that I frequent, that the the picture quality of "Gladiator" is not worthy of the "Sapphire" logo that it carries. Apparently an older master was used and digital noise reduction and edge enhancement were applied to the encode of this movie on Blu-Ray thus degrading the overall picture quality of the film. Bill Hunt's review can be read in full here: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/review...83109.html#gla With a heavy heart (as I am a big fan of the movie "Gladiator") I canceled my pre-order of this movie on Blu-Ray and have decided not to purchase it. I expect more for the premium price that is asked of these movies on Blu-Ray and, specifically, of a movie that has the "Sapphire" stamp of approval. It is my hope that Paramount issues a new remastering of this movie on Blu-Ray. I assure you I will be one of the first in line to buy it. Regards, /name here/ Last edited by ack_bak; 09-01-2009 at 04:57 PM. |

Excellent e-mails, guys.
This is really "putting your money where your mouth is." You're not just *****ing, then sitting back and hoping someone else does something about it. Great job, and I hope the collective reaction by BD enthusiasts catches someone's attention. |

I bought it along with Braveheart, this is a upgrade from the DVD. The VIdeo was average compared to many other blu-ray films and the audio was solid. In some fighting scenes the audio were scratchy sounding during the fight with the guy and the lions. It must be the source when they recorded the sounds, Braveheart sounds perfect for me. I am an audiophile, I nitpick. It's a nice upgrade and I hope they do reissue this.
7.5/10 I also sent an email complaining about the video quality. I hope they do offer a reissue like Sony did with the fifth element. Last edited by tau31; 09-01-2009 at 05:01 PM. |

Currently watching Gladiator with an hour to go in the movie and I'm already losings interest. Don't get me wrong, we all know how good of a movie Gladiator is... but this transfer is sub par. The AQ is amazing so they at least got something right. The PQ does have a few (rare) moments of brilliance but for the most part this transfer appears either soft and dull or waxy with a lot of edge enhancement. Seriously I feel like I'm watching the dvd version and not a high def movie. I wish I had just saved my money or purchased Braveheart instead. I hope they re-release a better transfer and we get to trade in for it. Now I'm worried if Forrest Gump will be a good transfer.

I have a new theory:
Paramount found out about the PQ issues. Stopped all production of the discs. Did and will not release screeners. Let the masses buy the copies that are made instead of throwing out all of that inventory. Plan on replacing any copies to those who make a stink about it when re-release is done. This way everybody ends up happy with the LEAST amount of financial damage. Think about it if they pulled the release, the would have lost a boat load. IMO ![]() |

Back then there was that defunct format that they were competing against. The re-release was more to clean up a bit of bad publicity that the toshiba format people could use against them. If there was no format war going on I don't think the re-release would have ever come close to happening.
With nothing like that these days I think it's a longshot that the same thing would happen here but you never know. |

It'd be nice if no one bought Gladiator but you know there are tons of people who don't come to websites like this one.
