Universal is always (as far as I know) region-free.

The Paramount and Universal discs are the same in content right down to the interactive materials.

The only differences are:

The menus: Paramount's main menu/floating menu with home button to access special features versus Universal's blade pop out menu.

The new interactive content: Paramount's disc will have the picture-in-picture content appear on screen seamlessly while Universal will call it U-Control and you'll see that little U pop-up and then the content will play.

As for region status...

Universal has region coded two UK releases for region B: Hellboy II and Step Up. These were rare so heopefully Steelbook fans can enjoy this release.

The Sapphire Series: Our Best Pictures With The Best Picture.

Its Paramount's premiere line for their Academy Award winning best pictures. Sapphires are Blue so Blue and Blu go together.

Same here...a little high. I've got the extended on DVD. I think I paid $35 for that back in the day. $20 or less....no rush..

edit: I may have to get the steelbook!

After looking on both Amazon.com and co.uk there seems to be no mention of a steelbook edition.

Gladiator is a great film, and I cannot wait to add it to my Blu-ray library.

I'm also really liking this Sapphire line of titles.

Default Saphire Series

Dreamworks is putting the collection of Gladiator, Braveheart and Forest Gump on Blu Ray, as part of their "Saphire Collection." Gladiator is listed for September 01, 2009 release on Amazon.com. Can't wait!!!

Does anyone know if this Sapphire Series will be a digibook, or a regular slipcover case?

Digibook releases are only done by Warner. Sony did one so far and that was Dr. Strangelove. The Sapphire Series appear to be slipcovers.
